Stabler and Benson belong to Dick Wolf.
If they were mine, they'd be married by now.
I heard, What is that Sound by Lamb and this was born

It had all happened so suddenly. His head colliding with the window, the screams of his partner. Cars honking as she no doubt risked her life to get to him. Her fallen hero.
He focused on it. The steady thump, thump, thump. He consciously let her warmth seep into him. "It's ok, you're ok." her voice was frantic.
He wanted to reassure her. He was supposed to protect her not be on the ground. His head was cradled against her. He could feel her softness, he burrowed deeper. He had wanted to do this for so long, he was glad of the excuse to be this near to her.
"Listen to me, you're ok. Everything will be o.k." she kept repeating it, her own personal mantra. He didn't have the strength to even open his mouth to agree. He just lay there, limp and complacent.
He felt them rip him from her arms. Heard them calming her down, "He'll be fine, you can ride with him."
Her desperate scrambling, a harsh sound in the tiny ambulance. He missed her body against his.
"Liv?" he tried but his vocal chords would not move. She reacted, having heard his silent query. "I'm here, El." she took his hand, her thumb making little circular motions. He followed the pattern with his mind, letting it lull him to sleep.
The darkness was comforting, he forced himself to swim through the haze. Fighting through layers of pain, he kept searching for her voice.
"The doctor's said, you'll be o.k. Some bruising but you should be fine." she repeated, he could feel her gaze on him. A silent caress, he could feel hands holding his but they weren't the contact he wanted.
He focused all his energy on her, trying to see past the fuzziness. "Where are you?" he asked, the blur in front of him moved as if hit. "I'm right in front of you." controlled hysteria echoing in her voice.
"I can't see. I can't see anything." he remarked. The sudden fear of never being able to see those brown eyes, that sarcastic smile. He could imagine his eyes must be wide in terror, a perfect match to her own.
A hand squeezed his, but he felt no joy in it. Only a basic human need to squeeze back for his real match had walked out, searching for an answer to their despair.
He hated being home, being locked up without a key. Able to step through the door but unable to turn the handle. Elliot heard the knock before it came, he stood in the doorway.
"Come in, Liv." he greeted her. She pause before coming in, her concern leading her into the room awkwardly . It sat between them, both adults silent.
"El." she began but before thought or reason could make a dent, he pulled her toward him. He didn't need his eyes for this. She sagged against him, her arms curling around his back. It felt so right to envelope her in his arms.
'The two detectives sat there, embracing each other. No worry of what they were doing passing through their minds.
Beats slowed and breathing evened. Relaxed in slumber, nothing was heard in the small house.
Nothing but the sound of two hearts beating as one, each supporting the other's rhythm.
