Light Yagami, age 18, was one of Japan's best and brightest. The college entrance exams had been brutal, and he really needed this relaxation time. He lounged sleepily against a tree in the park near the school's campus, feeling the warmth of the sun on his face through the leaves.

But minutes later, as he was falling asleep, he became subconsciously aware of something blocking the heat. He opened his eyes lazily, glancing up into the branches to find a boy perched on the lowest limb. The other young man was sitting on the branch, his tongue dragging up one side of an ice cream cone and his bare feet dangling over the ground. Light could just barely make out his eyes under his shock of scruffy black hair: dark grey and expressionless like a doll's, with nearly black shadows underneath them, and piercing right into him.

"You really shouldn't fall asleep in public places like these." He said with a severe lack of emotion in his voice. "I had to stop someone from stealing your schoolbag."

Light blinked curiously, noticing that his bag was also up there on the branch, dangling by its strap as if it were being protected from bears.

"Judging by the weight of it, you are quite the studious type." The strange boy commented…politely? Yeah, politely.

"Well, I suppose I should thank you." Light said calmly, standing up.

"Yes, I suppose you should." That time, Light was sure he heard a smirk somewhere in his tone; but the boy's face was unchanged as he caught a bit of melting ice cream with his finger. "It was quite a burden getting it to stay up here."

Who was this guy, anyway? Nobody likes a wise ass. And what was his problem? Who goes out barefoot, let alone climbs trees that way? Not to even mention that it was unseasonably cold that day.

The boy's toes curled almost self-consciously. "You're staring." He mumbled bluntly, placing his free hand on his perch and pulling his feet up so he knelt in a crouch position on the limb.

"Sorry." Light said simply, reaching to pull his bag down from the branch. "I feel inclined to ask if you realize how cold it is today."

The other boy merely stared down at him. "Don't worry about me." He said.

So, Light didn't worry; when he managed to pull down his satchel, he walked off, content with the theory that he would probably never see the strange boy again.
