A/N just a little one shot that came to mind as I was thinking about that quote from the show. 'Cause I was thinking 'it just be hard for a man that loves his wife so much to lie to her all the time.' So this is just a little thing to show what might be going in inside Edwin's mind as he tries talking to Anna.

"I may not always be truthful with Anna, but I am always honest." The words rang in the back of Edwin's mind as he dropped Peggy off at her apartment. He pulled up to the sidewalk and stopped the car, getting out to open Peggy's door despite her protests. The two said their goodbyes as usual, Peggy telling him that she would call when he was needed and as usual Jarvis agreed. Once he saw that she was safely inside he pulled off and headed home.

"I may not always be truthful with Anna, but I am always honest." The words seemed to be constantly chanting in the background. He looked down at the clock, ten fifty three, Anna would be in bed asleep by the time he got home. Edwin began searching his mind for explanations, honest explanations. He hated this, keeping secrets (even if they were only half secrets) from his wife.

Jarvis pulled into the driveway of his home and got out of the car. There was a light on in their bedroom upstairs. Edwin's lips twitched a bit as he made his way to the door. He was quite in doing all this, hoping, no more like praying, that possibly Anna was in fact asleep and simply left a light on by accident.

Edwin carefully took off his coat and shoes, leaving each in its own designated spot then began to sneak up the stairs. He walked as quietly as humanly possible until he reached the bedroom door. Jarvis paused, leaning his head on the door to see if perhaps he could hear something but he heard nothing. Which was really no help to him because Anna was generally a quiet woman, so if she was awake she would most likely be silent and if she was asleep she would be as well, for she did not snore (much to his relief).

Edwin sighed and opened the door slowly to find exactly what he was hoping not to find. Anna was sitting at her vanity with her journal beside her, although it seemed she had given up on writing in it. She turned to look at him and smiled a smile that seemed a bit off, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. Jarvis frowned apologetically at his wife before entering the room.

"Forgive me for being so late, but really darling, you didn't have to wait for me." Jarvis said taking off his tie and going to his dresser to get some pajamas. Anna looked at him through the mirror and smiled weakly again.

"I know, but I couldn't sleep, I was worried..." She began meekly, "you've been out so late these past few nights and I barely see you enough during the day as it is. What in heavens name has this man got you doing?"

"I may not always be truthful with Anna, but I am always honest." Once again the words taunted him and his thoughts. Jarvis sighed, walking over to where his wife sat and kissing her on the head.

"Errands mostly," he said. They were errands of sorts, if you tilt your head and squint a little, Edwin thought sarcastically to himself.

"What sort of errands keep you out all night?" Anna asked in disbelief, following her husband to bed.

The kind that involve Peggy Carter, he thought. "Well I'm not really running the errands, just sort of helping a... colleague of Mr. Stark's to get them finished."

Anna seemed to be buying the story, well... To him she was buying it, but for her, she could see right through it. Anna didn't mind that he was keeping a few secrets, they were work secrets, nothing more. Besides she never much cared for all the business that Howard Stark was involved in.

"Well," Anna said, snuggling into the covers, "they must not be your everyday errands, like fetching milk, if they keep you out so late."

Edwin's mind flashed back to the bombs and the gun and the milk truck from a few nights ago.

"Actually, there was an incident with a milk man, but he wasn't very kind and he didn't have any milk." Jarvis said with a smile. It was more to himself for being so clever than it was to his wife, although Anna still smiled back.

"Good night my dear." She said giving him a light kiss before rolling over and turning off the lamp.

"Good night." He replied in the darkness.

"I may not always be truthful with Anna, but I am always honest." The words came to him again as he closed his eyes. But as he ran the conversation through his head Jarvis smiled and the words faded away. He had done just that, been both untruthful and honest, and done so successfully. But how long would that last? Certainly not always.
