Chapter 1
Summary: After so many years of searching the universe, Pink Diamond finally found her son.
Pink clouded his vision.
The gentle warmth of her body kept lulling him back to sleep, the ever present scent of roses that always surrounded her filled the air. Her breath was cool, yet steady. She held him close. It may have been difficult at first, but later on, she really did think that she had the hang of sleeping after Steven had spoken so fondly of it. Soft snoring drew her attention to the soundly sleeping Steven curled up in her lap, she had one hand protectively draped around him, keeping him warm as well.Slowly, he began to stir. With a small yawn accompanied by a stretch, his dark brown eyes met her pale pink ones.
No words were said, there was a comfortable silence in the air aside from the strange breakfast television show that Steven was so eager to watch. She looked down at his small form, dark tufts of unruly hair bobbed up and down slightly as he moved his head to the overly cheerly theme song of the odd cartoon that Rose had still yet to understand. She had spent nearly an hour just staring down at Steven, an amused smile on her face at watching her son sway his pijama bottom clad legs swinging up and down. Stars did it feel good to call him that...her son.
After so many years she could finally hold him in her arms, she could finally hear his voice, she could actually see how he looked like without having to rely on Sapphire's future vision.
She felt a gentle tug on the tuft of her frilly skirt, two warm brown eyes stared lovingly at her. She carefully scooped him up into her palms and brought him closer to her face. She had to be very careful with him. She had learned a long time ago, even before she had him that humans were very delicate, he may have been part gem, but in the end he was still human and she didn't know a lot about humans, but she did know that they weren't as strongly built as gems were. She had learned that the hard way when Blue nearly poofed poor Steven in one of her crushing hugs. But still, it felt like everyone was starting to warm up to him. Ruby and Sapphire were especially infactuated with him from the very begining and Blue wouldn't put him down; to be honest neither could she. Even Yellow seemed to show quite an interest in him, no matter how hard she tried, she just couldn't get rid of the smile that appeared whenever he was around.
Everything really was perfect. The other Diamonds were planning on introducing him as Pink Diamond's sole heir, but Rose felt that it was for his own protection that he should remain a secret that only the royal family knew of. Afterall, there weren't exactly that many gems who would gladly accept a human child, more specifically a child to one of the most powerful beings in the Universe, the power that he would someday possess, let alone that he already possessed inside of his gemstone.
But she swore on her life, she promised to very the man who helped raised her son, and vowed in front of White Diamond that no one other than herself would look after him and that she would take responsibility for him, as a parent and as a Diamond, she meant every single word. And no one would ever take him away from her again.
She'd lay down her own life to make sure of it.
