Yay! My first Death Note fic!

Disclaimer: Yeah, yeah, rub it in, why don't you?

Yagami Light was a teenager who consisted of two different personalities: Raito, an innocent high school student who had had the misfortune of picking up a shinigami's notebook, and Kira, who had begun developing as soon as Raito had layed hands on the Death Note. Half of Yagami Light was in love with the pale, socially-inept detective L, the clever man who was heading the investigation against Kira. The other half hated the older man's suspicion and constant scrutiny. L, himself, loved half of Yagami Light, and they might have been happy except for one thing - L fell for the one that hated him.

L was suspicious of Yagami Light from the start. The whole thing seemed too perfect - Light, the son of the chief of police, a model student with wit to rival his own. Light seemed to be able to be able to slip into Kira's thought process too easily for L to believe that Light was nothing more that an insightful young man. L always kept a close watch on him, even when it seemed impossible that Light could be Kira. Somewhere along the line, L started to enjoy Light's company. He fell in love with Light's secretive nature, his quick answers, his ability to interpret L's thoughts so accurately that they seemed to have some sort of telepathic connection. He loved his silky auburn hair, amber eyes, and lightly tanned skin. No matter how hard L tried, Light was someone that could never be entirely figured out. This drove L insane. That was why he loved him.

The side of Yagami Light that hated L hated him for one main reason - L suspected him of being Kira. L was constantly testing Light, trying to prove that he was Kira. Though Light did every possible thing to prove to L that he was not, L refused to believe, always keeping him under surveillance. This annoyed Light to no end. That was why he hated him.

The other half of Yagami Light loved L for one main reason - his intelligence. Though Light did everything right, though he did not make even one mistake, L saw right through him. L could deduce Light's thoughts just as well as Light could figure out L's, until the point where there was almost no need for words at all. In the beginning, Light was frustrated with this fact, wishing to keep his secrets just that. However, as time went by, frustration gave way to grudging admiration, admiration became affection, and ultimately love. Light loved L's inquisitive nature, his quiet brilliance, his careful dissection of every word Light ever uttered, every action Light ever made. He loved his unkempt black hair, endless eyes, and skin so pale from never seeing the sun. Light did not want to love L. It drove him insane. That was why he loved him.

That was why he killed him. Yagami Light orginized L's death and held him in his arms at the very last. As pain radiated across his chest, L's dark eyes sought the eyes of the man he loved. He did not find them. Raito was gone, had shied away as soon as he realized that the detective was dying. Though he hated L, he had never wanted him dead. Instead, a horrible smirk twisted the handsome face as Kira, his enemy, leered down at L. Kira smiled as the last spark of life left L's body, and the last person he felt any sort of affection for passed from the world. Gods did not feel. Nor did Kira, until his dying day, when he looked once again into those eyes - sorrow and regret.
