Disclaimer: For all you newbies who know nothing about fanfiction.net and disclaimers, here's mine: Anything you recognize is not mine. If I actually owned yu yu hakusho, I wouldn't be posting stories on this site, I'd be making them into cartoons, and allowing myself to become filthy rich. But unfortunately, this is not so, and thus, my story on this site.

Author's note: This story is neither a yaoi nor a shonen-ai. As a matter of fact, there won't be much pairings in this story, unless it adds to the overall plot, or adds humor to the story, excepting some pairings  that were already present in some part of the series.

Also, in the alternate reality, the saint beasts never existed, as I feel that it has nothing to do with the plot of this story.

The main focus of this story is the master:apprentice relationship between Yusuke and Genkai, as well as younger Toguro's relationship with Genkai, as well as how others as well as the Yu Yu Hakusho world was affected the one decision made by Genkai.

Hiei and Kurama will not be focused on in this story, as they were not really affected by Genkai.

Please note that this is the edited version of chapter one. I would like to thank my first three reviewers: Dark Prince of the Sun, Madame Arrow Foxfire, and Arach. I read the reviews and I tried to edit it so that it's more reader-friendly. I even added some more details to it. Chapter 2 will be posted soon. I need to type it, edit it, add stuff to it, etc, and then when I'm satisfied with it, I'll post it.

The Ripple Effect

Summary: Fifty years ago, Genkai had a chance to wish for anything. She chose a path and followed it, abandoning her love, and choosing what she felt was right, and unknowingly changed the lives of so many. But imagine a dimension, where she chose differently. A single change that rippled across the surface and in and different outcomes were formed. Yusuke and Kuwabara get transported to another dimension where Genkai chose differently. What next?

"Don't let him open another portal!" yelled Yusuke.

The quartet of spirit detectives was attempting to capture a demon that specialized in opening portals. It was an ugly demon, with a murky green humanoid shape, two pairs of horns, claws, and a pair of dark eyes and was wearing boots, and a long dark cloak. The demon was using his abilities to cause chaos in the three worlds. They were currently in the Reikai, running along the river Styx, and have already been to the Makai twice, the Ningenkai thrice, and twice in the Reikai, and this time would be their third.

Hiei snorted in clear annoyance, impatience and disgust, and suddenly ran forward in the burst of speed, quickly drawing his sword despite the shouting of the others, when the demon quickly turned around and threw something black at Hiei. He dodged it as the demon disappeared into a portal, and another portal appeared behind Hiei, then another black object shot out. Hiei turned around and his eyes widened as the object grew and swallowed him, while the demon stepped out of his portal, looking quite smug. Luckily Hiei's energy signature could be felt a couple miles away several seconds later.

Suddenly, the demon pulled a golden ring out of his left jacket pocket. The ring was quite plain, like a small gold band. The remaining detectives could feel the power radiating from it however, and Kurama immediately recognized it, from Youko's experience as a thief.

"An amplifier!" but the warning came too late, as a look of intense concentration covered the demon's face as he slipped it on, making it look more ugly than it already was, and the ring started glowing, as portals opened right under the three remaining detectives. The demon however was too busy concentrating on using the ring, and so he failed to see a plant rapidly grow and stick itself through his vital organs. The three detectives dropped through the black holes, as a whip from Kurama flashed out took hook itself around the plant that was still in the dead demon's body. Kurama pulled himself out, and turned to help Yusuke and Kuwabara, but their portals had already closed up.

Kuwabara yelled. He hated traveling through portals. The last time something like this happened was several years ago at the Dark Tournament. He groaned and wrapped his hands around his stomach, as he regretted eating that tuna sandwich that Yukina made for him. But then he reasoned. Yukina had made it for him after all, and who was he to refuse something from his love, and he smiled, but his musings were cut short as he saw a light coming closer, and swallow him.

Kuwabara fell hard on the ground, and he groaned. He felt himself turn green, as he remembered the reason for his thoughts. As he fought to keep his stomach under control, a few feet away he heard a body hit the ground. He look around to see Yusuke.

"Kuwabara, you really green."

Kuwabara saw a rock, and quickly ran over to it and vomited. When he was finished, he wiped his mouth and turned around.

"Geez, what did you eat. Smells like really rotten fish."

It was a golden tuna sandwich, made by the angel of my life, the…"

"In other words Yukina made it."

Kuwabara frowned

" Will you let me finish?"

"No."

"Fine. Well maybe Kurama will listen to me. Hey, where's Kurama?"

Yusuke quickly answered.

" Didn't you see the rose whip? He got himself out before the portal could swallow him stupid!"

"But I can't sense him, or Hiei."

"Probably already left the Reikai."

There was a moment of silence as Kuwabara walked over from the rock and glanced around, then he broke the silence as he looked around.

"Hey! We're at Koenma's office!"

Yusuke quickly turned around to face a very large building which he immediately recognized as Koenma's office, at least until his King Enma came back from another vacation.

"Good, now I can yell at the toddler for sending me on a d**n wild goose chase." and Yusuke slammed his right fist into his left hand. He then walked over to the intercom, pressed the button and yelled.

"It's Yusuke! Open up before I blast my way into this stupid building!" The doors opened immediately at a remarkable speed, which should have been impossible for doors that size.

Perhaps a little recap would be sufficient at this point. The story starts after the series. Kuwabara is married to Yukina, became a biologist and found that Hiei was Yukina's brother (yes, Kuwabara is that slow that he had to become a biologist to figure out that Hiei was Yukina's brother, despite the many hints made by the others).

Hiei still patrols the borders of the Makai. Occasionally he does some mercenary work.. Regardless of all this, he still finds time to regularly threaten Kuwabara about what he will do to him if he should hurt Yukina in any way ( torture, death etc.).

Kurama is a botanist and if he isn't working, he is spending time taking care of his family especially his mother. Yusuke married Keiko. He's a professional boxer, while Keiko is a lawyer. They have one girl, who Yusuke is teaching to fight (behind Keiko's back).

Kuwabara and Yusuke are about 24, while Kurama is 25 ( I think that he was supposed to be a year older). Since Kurama and Hiei aren't really the main focus of this story, I will go into no detail on their appearance. Yusuke however has his hair short and spiked, while Kuwabara still looks relatively the same.

(I do not know what is the point of some of this information, but I just typed it in for the sake of typing it in.) Now on to the story.

The door to Koenma's office opened. Koenma was sitting at his desk stamping paperwork, not even bothering to read what was written. Kuwabara and a severely pissed off Yusuke strolled into his office. Koenma obviously didn't notice their presence, and it did nothing to calm Yusuke. Yusuke folded his arms and cleared his throat, causing Koenma to look up, and Yusuke began.

"You stupid toddler! The next time you send me on another d**n goose chase, don't! When you have portal demon to chase, you go! Maybe you might actually come back looking a bit older."

Koenma's eyes widened.

"I didn't send you on a case to chase a portal demon."

"What?!" yelled both Yusuke and Kuwabara. Koenma ignored their outburst as he pointed to Kuwabara, and completely changed the subject.

" But what is he doing here! Normal humans aren't supposed to know about the spirit world! And aren't you supposed to be on that other case, the rescue mission, the one for Hiei's sister?"

Kuwabara turned very pale.

"Yukina? Hold on my love, Kuwabara is coming!" Kuwabara turned to the exit and started to run. Yusuke didn't hesitate to grab the back of his shirt collar.

"Not so fast. We still need to find out where she is."

"I do not need to know where she is. The bond that connects us will guide me to my love." Yusuke rolled his eyes, as he turned looked at Koenma.

"Where is she?"

"At Turukane's stronghold."

Kuwabara started running again.

"Hold on Yukina!" Unfortunately Yusuke was still holding his shirt. Yusuke focused on Koenma.

"Didn't do something like this years ago?"

"Huh?" asked a very puzzled Koenma.

"You know. Me, Kuwabara and Botan go to the stronghold, fight a bunch of demons, the triad, and the Toguro brothers, blah, blah, blah, who come back to kick our a****s all the way to the dark tournament, where I kill the younger Toguro. Day saved." Koenma looked stunned, then thoughtful, then stunned again.

"What? I don't remember any of that ever happening."

"What?!!" yelled the two detectives. Then Yusuke continued, as he narrowed his eyes at Koenma. He then looked very closely at Koenma, and as surprising as it may seem, Koenma actually looked a bit younger, if it was possible.

"Who am I?" asked Yusuke.

"Huh" Koenma was clearly puzzled by the question, but still answered.

"You're Yusuke Urameshi. You're fifteen years old, you attend Sarahaski Junior High School. You have the worst grades at your school, and you're the current spirit detective."

Now something was really wrong, thought Kuwabara. Koenma seems different, and Urameshi seems to find this situation really fishy. Yusuke's 24 for crying out loud, and he graduated high school, after a lot of pressuring from Keiko. What's going on?

It seemed that Yusuke had the exact same thoughts. Yusuke narrowed his eyes at Koenma, as said exactly what was on everyone's minds.

"Okay, first of all, what the hell is going on?"
