Waffles
She didn't get it. She didn't understand what had changed between them. All she knew was that it was different today, from all the days before.
They were sitting at their table like they usually did. Mason and Daisy were already off on their reaps. Roxy was getting up to leave as well, leaving her alone with Rube. She finally looked up at him, to find him looking back at her, and in that moment everything was different. He smiled at her a little, and for once, instead of giving him her normal blank look, or some version thereof, she smiled back. The shock on his face was enough for her to keep smiling, damn the soreness that would come later.
She felt something shift between them. Something felt warm and tingly in her chest like someone had lit a match where her heart should have been. Rube continued to stare at her, his black gaze warmer than usual. So she waited to see what would happen. She'd become good at waiting. She was a reaper after all. He finally looked away, and did something he'd never done before. He pushed his plate of waffles toward her. She was surprised to say the least. The man never shared his waffles. The occasional basket of French fries maybe, but never his waffles. She realized in that moment exactly what had changed. It wasn't her really, it was him. He had changed. Something in her had changed him.
Instead of taking the plate and munching, like her fellow reapers would do, she moved to his side of the bench and pulled the plate back between them. Rube looked a little surprised himself. She never sat next to him if she had a choice. And for a moment she had to wonder why that was.
She shook her head free of that thought and cut into the waffle before offering him the first bite. He took it gingerly and when a little syrup dripped onto his lips, she did the first thing that came to mind. She leaned up a licked it away before kissing him properly. The warm tingles she'd felt only moments before blazed like someone had poured gasoline down her throat. She pulled back and this time his eyes were like fire. She smiled again. She couldn't help it, not when he looked at her like that. Rube smiled too and wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her into his side and pressing his own kiss to her lips.
Somewhere around the last bite of the plate of waffles, she realized that she'd fallen in love with Rube and before she could stop them, the words spilled out of her lips to fill the air between them, almost visible.
"I love you." For the first time ever, she thought, Rube blushed and mumbled something under his breath. She didn't understand so she asked him to repeat it.
"I love you too, Peanut." She felt herself smiling again when it finally sank in, what he'd actually said and again her mouth ran off before her brain could grasp the situation.
"We are so fucked." He started to laugh and she couldn't help but join in because it was almost comical that he was in love with her and she was in love with him. But at the moment it didn't matter because eternity was spread our before their feet and they had just started to walk the path over a plate of waffles.
