Alone, at Last
James perched a little uncomfortably on the sofa, staring down at his hands. Across the room from him were his two best friends, Remus, slung across Sirius' lap, whispering and giggling between themselves, interlaced with the occasional peck on the cheek, or even the odd affectionate nip.
Beside him, his girlfriend Lily smiled at the couple, amusement dancing in her sparkling green eyes, and sometimes glancing slyly over at James' embarrassed face.
But come on, thought James. He was not homophobic by any stretch of the imagination, but that did not change the fact that Remus and Sirius were his friends. It was weird. I mean, he thought. Sure, Lily and I were friends before we hooked up, but that's different. We weren't as close as those two. Although, he corrected himself, I suppose that's why it works for them.
Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Sirius nuzzle Remus' nose before leaning in for a kiss.
Lily glanced away, but she was still smiling. She knew how to give them some privacy, and turned her attention to James instead.
"Look at them," she whispered in his ear. "They're so sweet. I can't believe it took them this long to get together."
James coughed. It hadn't taken them that long, he thought. They could leave it for a few more years yet.
"Should we tell them now?" she murmured softly.
James flushed at her close proximity, her breath on his ear, her body so close to his. Was this how Sirius and Remus felt when they saw each other?
He nodded curtly to her.
He cleared his throat loudly. The two teenagers jumped out of their skin, as though they had forgotten anyone else was in the room. They blushed, and Remus nuzzled into Sirius' shoulder in embarrassment.
"Lily and I have something to tell you."
The two boys looked at them expectantly.
"Is Lily pregnant?" They asked in unison.
James hid a quick smile as he watched Lily's face change. Her lips pinched together, eyes suddenly growing hard.
"NO!" she growled, "And if you ever ask that again, I'll... I'll..."
She trailed off. She was no good at threats.
"James and I have decided to move in together." she put her arm around him and pecked him on the cheek, coaxingly. He was still a little nervous at the commitment, she knew, but she also knew that if he had to spend another moment sharing a flat with those two lovebirds (well, lovedogs... or something along those lines), he'd probably explode.
"We've already rented a flat, and all we've got to do is move James' stuff out."
That wouldn't take long, she knew. James didn't have a job at the moment, and his batchelor's pad consisted of a mattress, a box for his few clothes, and a couple of... videos. Yes, THAT kind.
The two boys sat there, a little stunned at the news. They would miss their friend, obviously, but, Serius thought, there were advantages...
"I"LL HELP PACK!" He yelled exitedly.
Remus stepped out of the shower, wrapping a towel around his lower half. Wandering into his room, he scrabbled around his drawer for boxers. Geez. That was the problem with living with two other guys. None of them could be bothered to do the laundry. His hand finally found a pair.
"Hey, roomy." he heard Sirius' voice say. He felt a pair of arms wrap themselves around his waist. He could feel Sirius' breath on his cheek. Sirius began to kiss and nibble the back of Remus' neck, brushing back the long golden hair.
The other boy tore his lips away from Remus for a moment, although he remained pressed against Remus' back. Sirius grabbed the boxers from his boyfriend's hand and flung them into a far corner of the room.
"You won't be needing those for now..." he breathed.
