Sirius Black is so different from anyone else Remus has ever met.
He's a rebel, from his sorting to his clothes. He doesn't care about anything and for Remus, who has spent his whole life caring about everyone's opinions but his own, it's odd, to say the least.
Maybe that's why he falls for him.
...
Remus sat down at the Gryffindor table, feeling a weight lift of his back. He had done it! Remus had sat down at the hat had told him that he was smart and loyal and ambitious but that he was mostly brave. He liked the sound of that, bravery. He had never really felt brave before.
"I bet you're plenty brave," The boy beside him sat and Remus turned around, confused.
The boy laughed, a dog-like bark that made Remus smile back at him. "You said that out loud. I'm Sirius, Sirius Black. My entire family has been in Slytherin but I'm tired of snakes. Trying out lions for a change."
Remus stuck out his hand excitedly. His first friend! "I'm Remus Lupin. It's an honor to meet you.
...
"I'm bored!" Sirius complained, leaping on Remus's bed. Remus barely had time to move his book before all the papers on his bed fell on the floor from the force of the impact.
Remus glared at Sirius, who sheepishly reached down to pick up the papers and place them in a neat pile before lying his shaggy head on Remus's lap.
"Sorry, Moony, but I'm boreeeeeed," He exclaimed.
Remus sighed. "Fine. One last page and then we can go."
Sirius lit up gleefully and Remus turned his face downwards to hide his grin.
...
"The balls is coming up," Sirius remarked casually, tossing his feet into Remus's lap. Remus re-adjusted his position. James hid his grin.
"Planning on taking anyone special, Padfoot?" James asked.
Sirius shook his head. "I like someone but they aren't interested."
"And how do you know that?" James demanded, shaking his head in disgust. "Don't give up that easily, Padfoot."
"I can't ask them," Sirius said. "It'll ruin everything."
"I'll do it for you," James said and turned to Remus. "Moony, will you do us all the honor of taking Padfoot to the ball so he stops being a whiny prat? He's had a crush on you for years."
Remus dropped his book and ran.
...
Panting, Remus collapsed onto the nearby wall as he caught his breath. Sirius liked him? Sirius Black, notorious womanizer liked him?
"Remus, wait!" Sirius called and Remus winced. He hadn't wanted to confront Sirius about James's joke this early but fate clearly had other plans.
"Hi Sirius," Remus said finally after the awkward silence had gone on for far too long. "Don't worry about what James said. I know it was a joke."
Sirius's mouth dropped. "What?"
"I know it was a joke, Sirius," Remus said tiredly.
Sirius smacked his head against a wall. "After three years of me flirting with you, you still believe this is a joke? Moony, how obliviously can you be for a smart person?"
Remus couldn't believe his ears. "Wait, so you actually like me?"
"Yes, Moony," Sirius said, shaking his head. "Now, will you accompany me to the ball this weekend? Wouldn't want to deprive the world of my beautiful face, would you?"
Remus laughed, hardly able to belive his luck. "Yes, I will."
