Gift

The moon hung over a small gathering of drunken men.  Chichiri stood
amongst them, looking slightly lost and embarrassed, and wishing that
he could be anywhere else.

Tasuki came up to him and muttered, "C'mon Chichiri, the party's for
you, after all.  Ya don't want ta know what I had to go through to
find out when your birthday was in the first place."

Chichiri supposed he should be flattered.  Instead, he felt annoyed.
He had been planning on spending this evening carefully not thinking
about the fact that another year had passed.  Now he had to spend the
night amongst twenty plastered bandits.  He was going to kill Tasuki
the second they were alone.

He rethought this.  Well...his friend had meant well by this...he was
trying, after all.  Chichiri would just have to sneak out at the
first opportunity, "All right, Tasuki no da."

Tasuki grinned, and took a deep drink from an undistinguishable
bottle, "How old are you now, anyway?"

"Thirty no da."

The bandit choked on his drink, "What?!"

Chichiri just looked at him.

Tasuki glared at him a minute, "Why the hell didn't you tell me?
That's an important birthday."

"It isn't that important na no da."

"Fuck if it isn't!  That's it, I'm givin' you your present now," he
glared, "I have it up in my room.  Wait here a couple minutes, then
come get it."

Confused, but glad for an excuse to get out of the party, Chichiri
agreed.

Kouji came over after Tasuki left, "Where'd Genrou go?"

"He said he was going to get my present, and that I should wait a bit
before following no da."

For a minute, Kouji said nothing.  Then, he started to
laugh, "Really?  I was sure he was gonna wait..."

"What are you talking about no da?" Chichiri's masked expression
showed distrust.

"Nothing!  Nothing, don't worry," Kouji assured,  "I just think that
the rest of us should come with you and...help him present it," he
laughed again, "Hey, everyone!  Genrou's gonna give his gift!  I
think we should help!"

There were loud, drunken agreements all around.

So, as one, the group returned inside and climbed up the stairs to
Tasuki's room.

"Is that you, Chichiri?" Tasuki asked from behind the door.

The other bandits remained silent, and Kouji prodded Chichiri in the
arm.

"It's me, Tasuki no da," Chichiri said, rubbing his arm.  He didn't
know what was going on, but had a pretty good feeling that he didn't
want to.

"Well...c'mon in, then," Tasuki responded, sounding annoyed.

Chichiri moved to open the door, but was stopped by Kouji.

"Let me do it," he mouthed.  Chichiri noticed that he seemed to be
just as drunk as the other party-goers.

He shrugged.

Kouji grinned, and flung open the bedroom door.

"Happy Birthday, Chi-" Tasuki began, then turned a bright red.  His
face now matched the giant red bow tied around his waist.  What
really surprised Chichiri, however, was the fact that he was wearing
nothing else.
