Writing one actually helped me remember that an oneshot doesn't need a lot of conflict or has to be long. This is based a few months after the series is over. The idea for this one came from the idea of how badly Luka would be affected by Jahara being affected by the Hideous Tai Chi. (I know I called it the Violent Tai Chi in the Jakata x Phoebe oneshot I posted earlier this year, but it actually is Hideous, even though the character means Violent.)
"Jahara!" Luka peered through the dark fog around him. Where was she? She'd been there just a minute ago…. He turned around as a light shown from above. The character was an angry red-orange. The Hideous character….
Please no….
Luka ran ahead, screaming Jahara's name over and over, desperate. He stopped running as the character faded. Jahara was on her knees, supporting herself with her arms.
"Jahara?" Luka gently touched her shoulder.
Jahara turned, glaring at him with wild, red-orange eyes.
No!
Luka bolted awake, breathing short, fast breaths. He couldn't tell if he was shaking from the dream or because he was cold. His hair and clothes clung to him uncomfortably. Why, why, why?
"Luka?" Jahara stood in the doorway. "Did you have the bad dream again?" She looked as if she'd just been woken up, and her shoulder length hair was a bit of a mess, supporting that possibility.
Luka nodded, relaxing a little. It was one of the nights Jahara spent over whenever she visited for more than a few hours, which was often. She had her own room and kept a few things and a few changes of clothes in it, like the light, airy ones she slept in.
Jahara sat on the edge of the bed next to him. "It was about the Hideous Tai Chi, wasn't it?"
Luka nodded, looking away from her.
Jahara hugged him. "That was months ago. It's over."
"It can still happen… I'm not strong enough to protect you." His voice wasn't muffled enough to hide the hint of tears.
Jahara held him closer, rubbing his back. "It's okay." She sat with him like that until he gradually calmed.
"Jahara-"
Jahara dried his face with her sleeve, effectively interrupting him. "Forbidden cards have only one copy, right?"
"…Yes…"
"And Mishka had the only copy of the Hideous card."
Luka nodded.
"Mishka is gone now and so is the card," she gently made Luka look at her. "It's really over now. Hideous is gone."
"That's why…." His voice trailed off as he looked away again.
"Dreams can show your fears and that's one of them," she smiled softly, "We both know you are strong enough."
Luka didn't speak again for a little while. "Can you remember anything when…" he couldn't continue.
"Only the last few seconds after you said 'I love you'," she hugged him again. "That's what freed me. And it will if it ever happens again."
"You're not worried?"
"No, because for the first three months I had the nightmare, too."
Luka leaned out of the hug, frowning.
"I didn't want you to be worried. They stopped after I remembered how you freed me," she smiled. "Are you feeling better now?"
Luka nodded, lying back down. Jahara pulled the blanket around him. "I'll see you in the morning."
"Jahara-" he grabbed her hand.
Jahara sat back down. "I'll stay until you fall asleep, okay?"
