Calvin opened the box his parents had sent him and smiled as he pulled out his own baby blanket then set it aside, looking through the books and toys they had sent, occasionally stopping to smile at an item.

He pulled out a toy gun and laughed softly. "Spaceman Spiff," he murmured, a tear starting to form in his eye. He wiped it away and laughed then set the gun aside, knowing Susie would have a conniption of he gave it to their son.

Baby clothing came next and he pulled it out, most of it new since his things had fallen apart by now except for one outfit, a stylized Marine uniform.

Underneath it he saw orange then stopped breathing for a moment. Calvin pushed everything aside then pulled a slightly weatherbeaten and much patched stuffed tiger out of the box. "Hobbes," he breathed. "Hobbes, old man."

The tiger didn't respond and Calvin just stared at the tiger until he heard, "Cal! Come help me."

"Coming, hon." Calvin set down his once best friend, seating him as he once had without thought then went to see what his wife needed. He came back a few minutes later, carrying a baby swaddled in a light linen blanket. "Great, sleep all day, cry all night. It's not as if I don't have to work tomorrow."

The child only made a small sleeping sound and Calvin smirked. He set the baby down in the bassinet they kept downstairs. He picked up Hobbes and stared at him for a few minutes then grinned and put him in the bassinet. "Be as good a friend to him as you were to me, alright old friend?"

Hobbes watched Calvin leave the room then looked down at the baby. "Hurry up and grow, it's a magical world, and we need to go exploring!"
