I have found out where many Pokemon and Pokemon towns names come
from so here they are! Please note that I live in England so I may
make mistakes with Johto Pokèmon and Johto towns
Mew - Comes from the Greek letter "Mu"
Mewtwo - "Mu" also means in maths to enlarge by 2
Raichu - Japanese for thunder
Arcanine - Derived from "Canis" which is Latin for dog
Persian - A persian is a breed of cat
Chikorita - Named after a herbal vegetable called a Chicory
Spearow - Most likely derived from sparrow (I hope you know what a sparrow is!)
Fearow - See Spearow, but changed to put Fear in
Kakuna - Named after cocoon (how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly)
Metapod - Named after pod as that is basicly what Metapod is
Bellsprout - Named after sprout
Meowth - A cat goes "meow" in the real world and Meowth is named after
"meow"
Abra, Kadabra, Alakazam - If you haven't already noticed these are used
as "magic" words a lot.
Mr. Mime - A mime is a silent street performer that pretends to make
invisible walls.
Jynx - This seems to remind me of Jynxing someone
Larvitar - A larva is a stage in the development of an insect
Articuno - Named after arctic - which means the north pole
Cyndaquil - Named after cinder (what's left in a burnt out fire)
Dewgong - A dewgong is a seal-like creature
Seel - Guess :)
Magikarp - A carp is a kind of fish
Arbok, Ekans - They spell kobra (misspelt) and snake backwards
Koffing, Weezing - Named after the verbs coughing and wheezing
Gastly - Named after the adjective ghastly
Horsea - Named after sea-horses
Ponyta - Named after pony
Bayleef - Named after leaf and bay tree
Meganium - I'm not sure but I think it's named after a flower...
Totodile, Feraligatr - Named after crocodile and alligator
Unnown - Named after unknown
Pidgey, Pidgeotto, Pidgeot - Named after pidgeon
Bulbasaur - Named after bulb (sort of a plant seed)
Ivysaur - Named after the creeper plant, ivy
Venusaur - Named after the venus fly trap
Rapidash - Named after the verb dash
Likitung - Named after lick and tongue
Taurus - Named after the star sign Taurus (and the Latin word Taurus)
both relating to bulls.
Miltak - Shortened version of milk tank
Sentret - Named after the senses
Steelix - Named after the metal steel
Tentacool, Tentacruel - Named after tentacle
Vermillion City - Vermillion is a shade of yellow
Cerulean City - Cerulean is a shade of blue
Lavender Town - Lavender is a color and I think a flower
Violet City - Violet is purple
Goldenrod - Goldenrod is a shade of ... (surprise suprise) gold
Pallet Town - A pallet is a measurment of something
Cinnibar Island - Cinnibar is a volcanic rock
Azelea Town - An azelea is a flower
Fushia City - Fushia is a shade of purple or pink
Duplica - Named after the word duplicate
Ash - Shortened name for Ashley or Ashton
Misty, Brock, Tracey, Sabrina - They're names - nuff said
Proffesors Oak, Ivy and Elm - All named after a tree or creeper
Lily, Daisy, Violet - All flowers
Flint - A rock
Giovanni - Has a "ge" sound in it which is Ancient Greek for earth
Bugsy - If you can't guess this one I give up
Lt. Surge - Lt. is a rank in the army and Surge somehow relates to electricity
