Metamorphosis
She is the same as the day they met. Though housed in a woman's body, she is still very much a lost girl without a home, so naïve and fresh that he feels as if their coloring should be switched and he could pluck her of a branch. She should be pure white surrounded by silver lining and he should be black and dark from the sun. When he breathes he swears she smells of unpicked strawberries.
She is the same as the day they met. She is just as childish as before, frolicking in fields, teasing Jaken, pleating her master's hair with fingers moving with loyalty and reverence and something they will never be able to name aloud.
He wonders why he is playing along with this charade if there is no benefit. She amuses him, yes, but not on such a grand scale that she is necessary to keep him entertained. He wonders why he is still playing this game and why it feels so much as if, not so much that he's losing (perish the thought – that would never be able to happen) but, rather, she is winning.
She is the same as the day they met. Her laugh is still the same, as are her gestures, and her smile has always been full and lush and open and -.
And everything falls into place and he wish he had seen this sooner because it is too late to stop it, too late to turn back time. With the swish of a blade he stole her death and with her first breath she stole his life.
She is the same as the day they met. She is just as childish as before, frolicking in fields, teasing Jaken, pleating her master's hair with fingers moving with loyalty and reverence and something they will never be able to name aloud.
He no longer is the same as the day they met. For when Rin's fingers tangle in the glorious strands of his hair, Sesshoumaru cannot help but slightly, imperceptibly lean into them. And passing through their skin is loyalty and reverence and something they will never be able to name aloud.
And its too bad that her life is a breath compared to his, and its too bad that what once was black is turning silver, and its too bad that a bird cannot come back if the cage rusts.
No matter how much her master misses her song.
Fin.

Author's note (only read if you did not get the ending): Apparently, some people don't get metaphors. The breakdown? Bird Rin's spirit. Cage yes, her body. Black turning into silver is a reference to her hair.
