This is just a short story that answers the question "What if she never fell down the stairs?"

"Cheer up," he said, turning from her and starting up the stairs, "maybe you'll have a miscarriage."
She thought of all the miseries childbearing meant. She could claw him. She lunged for him, but he sidestepped out of her reach. She lost her balance, and cried out. Rhett quickly thrust out his arms in order to catch her, and pulled her in close to his chest. Scarlett started to cry, and he held her head closer. Her chest heaved, as if she were struggling to breathe, and she was shakig from teror. Rhett rested his chin on her headd and sighed with relief. "Rhett. Rhett," she whispered in a soft voice, glad he had been there.
"Scarlett, my darling. It's all right, you're OK." He slowly ran his fingers through her dark hair, pushing it back from her face. "It's all right," he sighed.
"Rhett." Her words were strained and often interrupted by a sniff. "Rhett, I could have- could have-"
"Oh, darling, I know, I know, but everything's all right. You're fine."
"Rhett, you know, I want this baby. It's the first baby I've ever really wanted from the beginning. It felt good to say that without her temper getting in the way of her real feelings. She knew that happened often. She would feel one way but not know how to express it.
Rhett held her tighter and kissed the top of her head gently. "I love you, Scarlett. I'm sorry I said those things. I was saying them from my mouth, not my heart."
"I love you too, Rhett. I just wish I could have realized it sooner."
