Caleb gripped his flashlight and swallowed a deep breath. Each step he took further into the dark forest he feared the crunch of the grass beneath his shoes was made by someone else...or something.
"Stupid bet." he grumbled.
Just a half-hour ago he was partying with his friends; drinking and watching the football game. Then one of his companions, obviously intoxicated from alcohol, began questioning Caleb's courage. This of course broke out into a fight and ended with a bet. If Caleb could bring back proof that he had gone into the woods that was said to be haunted by a monster, he would get his friend's car. But if Caleb "chickened out", his friend would get Caleb's car.
Clearly too much alcohol for both of them.
By now Caleb had sweated out all the liquor he had consumed and was sober and horrified. He winced at his sudden, throbbing headache and crept further.
Then he saw something white in the distance shine from his flashlight. His heart stopped and so did his feet. After composing himself he stepped closer to the mysterious, bleached flash.
It was soon revealed that the white object was a note attached to a dead tree. The note read; HELP ME. Caleb ripped the paper off of the tree and stuffed it into his jean's pocket.
That should be enough proof for his drunk mind. Now I'm out of here.
But just as he turned around he saw something else in the distance. It was even whiter than the note had been, and it looked in the form of a man. His heart began racing and he dashed in the opposite direction.
I don't need anything else. I just need to get back to my car.
He ran as fast as his feet could carry him to the vehicle and violently shook the handle.
Locked.
He kicked the car and cursed in anger. How could he have been so stupid as to lock his keys in the car?
He scanned the area to make sure he hadn't dropped them anywhere on the dirt. Then there was the same white flash in the darkness. But this time it was closer.
Caleb jiggled the handle more, praying it would unlock. He turned around to see if the strange man was still in the distance.
He was right in front of him.
He dropped his flashlight and screamed in terror. The light flickered as it hit the ground.
Caleb felt a pang shoot up through his back and almost wondered if it was just his imagination. But soon he saw six, crimson-stained tentacles emerge from his chest. They wriggled in the new gaps in Caleb's body, blood dripping from each pointed tip and seeping into his jacket.
He was paralyzed with fear until he finally collapsed onto the grass. As he fell the tentacles twisted in and around his body before slipping out of his flesh.
His vision was blurring and he coughed into his hand. A scarlet liquid appeared in his palm and more of the fluid pooled around where he was lying. Caleb couldn't tell what the liquid was. Everything was turning red around him.
He looked up one last time at the towering, pale-faced man. His arms and legs were an extremely abnormal length and he wore a black suit with a red tie. Caleb saw the stained tentacles waving behind the man as he stood. He seemed to show no remorse, but then again, he didn't have a fact to express any sympathy.
Caleb reached into his pocket for the note he'd found and held it out in front of him. HELP ME. It was a pitiful act but it was all his body would allow him to do in its last defense.
Suddenly a large branch was driven into his gut; impaling him to the cheap metal of the vehicle behind him.
And everything faded to black...
