Greeted with a chorus of "Happy Birthday!"
Silver-wrapped presents and pink birthday cake
One hundred times worse than I had imagined

Stone hugs from impossible youth
A blank expression from the fairest of them all
Newest vegetarian still avoiding me as much as possible
Nothing personal just a precaution

Being dragged to a table and forced to open presents
Beautiful silver-wrapped packages
Slicing my finger…Shoot!
A single drop of blood oozing from the tiny cut
….
Freeze Frame! Flying back, landing in shattered crystal
Disorientation, intense pain, scarlet pooling on the floor
Seconds pass, a rusty, iron scent burns my nostrils
Only the young doctor stays calm during this whole commotion

Thoughts racing through my head
Not a surprise finding myself bandaged and bruised
Not realizing this accident would send my life spiraling into depression.
