He can't even begin to comprehend how beautiful she is, her cheeks white, but her face still full of life. Her hair is overgrown, and falls over her pillow like draped silk. While her blue eyes are closed, her eyelashes are still full, dark, and beautiful. Damian leans down to give her a light peck on the forehead, almost as if he's afraid he'd bruise her. He takes a seat on the only chair in the room, and grasps her cold hand, lacing his fingers with her own, just like old times. "Hello, Bro- Wayn- Stephanie," he begins, his voice quiet and tender. "It's been a long time."
Silence. Silence always greeted him when he spoke to her. This white room of her's was always silent. The birds outside never chirped. The wind never whistled. There was only the sound of the steady beep of the heart monitor and the whirring of the various machines in the room. He had learned to tune that noise out. It didn't matter anymore.
"I'm doing fine, I suppose," Damian said. No answer. "It's lonely at home without you. Nina misses you a lot." No answer. With a defeated sigh, he sunk a bit in his chair. He had dreamed that one day her eyes would flutter open and she would come straight home. That she would never leave his side again. That maybe, just maybe, they'd be able to put on their cowls once more and patrol the dark streets of Gotham.
But that would be dangerous. She would get hurt again. He would let no one harm her, not ever again.
Damian stared at her face for awhile, letting the incident repeat over and over in his head. Finally lowering his eyes, he lifted a large white book out of a bag by his chair. "I brought you something, Stephanie," he whispered, his voice slightly shaky. "Do you remember what you said? How you wanted to capture every moment forever?"
He opened the book, trailing his fingers over the first thick page. He didn't need the book to tell the story. It was all in his memory; his most important memories. They were above meeting father, above being born, above all else.
Stephanie was his everything.
"Let me tell you the story of us."
