This story is basically my take on Jake Anderson's feelings as he joined the Northwestern. It's just a short little thing. Kind of a one-shot deal. I'm going to begin to brainstorm about a story centering around Sig Hansen soon so I didn't have a lot of time to develop a full-blown story with this one. I decided to just make it a shorter, one-shot type thingy. Enjoy!!

When Jake Anderson received the call, he could hardly believe it. He was going to be working on one of the most elite boats in the Bering Sea Crab Fishing Fleet with the fourth-generation, legendary Hansen brothers. The thought was overwhelming and thrilling all at once.

Once he arrived in Dutch Harbor, he made a bee-line for the docks. He practically ran down the docks, scanning back and forth for the Northwestern. His large, green duffel bag was slung over his shoulder and bounced on his back as he strolled quickly down the dock. Finally, he saw the white and blue boat near the end of the dock. He broke out into a wide grin and quickened his pace.

Edgar Hansen, the youngest of the three Hansen brothers and the official deck boss of the Northwestern, was on the top of a stack of pots helping Matt Bradley tie them down. Matt was Edgar's life-long friend and fellow deckhand. The two men had known each other since grade school. When Matt was in a tough situation and needed a job, Edgar managed to convince his oldest brother and captain of the Northwestern, Sig Hansen, to give him a job on the boat. He had since then proven himself to be a loyal deckhand and a hard worker. Matt often struggled with his addiction to alcohol and whenever he found himself in trouble, he knew he could run to the Hansen brothers for help. They were more than fellow workers, they were his second family.

Matt glanced up for a second and caught sight of a young man walking quickly towards the boat. He smirked when he noticed the wide grin and excited look in his eyes. He nudged Edgar and nodded in the man's direction.

"I'm assuming that's the new guy," he said with a laugh.

Edgar smiled around his cigarette as he watched the young greenhorn study the boat, trying to figure out a way to get on.

"Hold up greenhorn!" he shouted as he began to climb down the stack to help out.

Jake looked up at Edgar and nodded. He could barely suppress his excitement as Edgar walked over to the rail.

"Toss me your bag," he said as he held out his hands to catch it.

Jake took the heavy duffel bag off of his shoulder and tossed it over the rail. Edgar grimaced as he caught it.

"What the hell did you pack?" he asked with an amused laugh.

Jake smiled sheepishly and shrugged his shoulders.

"I wasn't really sure what to bring," he said as he jumped up and grabbed the rail.

Edgar grabbed his arm and helped him climb over. Once Jake was safely standing on the deck, Edgar tossed the bag back to into his arms. Jake staggered under the weight, but the excited grin never left his face.

"Alright, hot-shot," said Edgar as he tossed his cigarette out into the water, "Go toss your stuff below deck and then hurry up and get back up here. You have a lot to learn."
