Waiting at the Gate

A tragedy story of Hemura Kenshin and Kamiya Kaoru

"Kenshin, please! Don't go!" Kaoru cried, her head on Hemura Kenshin's muscular chest.

"I have to. Hiko needs my help. And what about Tokyo? All of Japan may be lost if I don't help. Don't worry, love. You'll see me by the gate on the eve of Christmas." Kenshin replied softly.

"Y-you're sure?" She asked him, squeezing him tighter.

"Yes. I'm sure, love." He replied.

"O-okay. But I'll be waiting." She cried. That was when Hiko rode up on a black horse, a white one reluctantly following.

"Are you ready, my apprentice? We must go." Hiko said, climbing off of his horse.

"I am ready, that I am." Kenshin peacefully replied, giving Kaoru one last kiss; one last hug before getting on the white horse, riding off without looking back.

"He'll be fine, Ms. Kamiya. He's never failed me yet." Hiko reassured her. "Remember that he was once Battousai."

"I know. But Kenji's going to miss him. And what if Kenji never knows his father? What if his father-" Kaoru said, being cut off.

"Don't worry. Kenji will know his father. Kenshin is a battousai, and we need his help. He'll return the Eve of Christmas, as he promised. I'll personally see to it." Hiko said as he got up onto his horse slowly. "And if any danger lurks this way, get out immediately." Hiko said.

That night, Kaoru checked a checkmark on their calendar. It was December 10th. Just fourteen more days. Fourteen more days and he'd be home.

The next morning, she got up and did all the work she was used to. Yahiko came by to check on things, and Sano came over too, to help with the hard labor.

TEN DAYS LATER

Kenji was crying. She tirelessly got up and soothed him. Thinking 'just four more days.' While she was up, she fixed the curtains, which had fallen over Kenji in the crib, which made him cry, waking his young mother.

FOUR DAYS LATER

"Tonight he'll return! He'll be home at last!" Kaoru said when she woke up. She took Kenji to Megumi Dono's and bought some rice and fish. She swept the floor and washed the curtains. She made the bed and washed the sheets. She rewashed all the dishes, and washed the door.

That night, at about 7 PM, she went out to the gate. She'd decided that she'd be the first to see him. Kenji was still over at Megumi's. He was going to stay there for the night. Kenshin and she needed to have some time together. A wagon slowly rode up. It stopped at her the gate, and the driver bowed to her. He didn't get up. Hiko slowly rode up, as well, followed by about 50 men. They all looked sullen and sad.

"Kaoru-" Hiko said, slowly.

"Where's Kenshin?" She asked, frantically.

"He's in there." A man near the front said.

"So he's sleeping?" Kaoru asked confused.

"He's dead, Kaoru." Hiko said.

Kaoru screamed. She had to be held back as the pulled his body out of the wagon, bloodstained and battered, his gi and pants ripped in numerous places, his Reverse Blade Sword missing.

"You're free to clean him up and get him ready for a funeral. But if you can't, well, we'll do it if you can't. He deserves a good resting place." Hiko said.

"I-you can. I can't." she cried.

"Okay." Hiko simply said. He got up, told the men to put his body back in the wagon, and walked over to Kaoru. "He'll be ready by Friday. Okay?" He asked.

"Okay."

So how did everyone like it? I thought it was sad.

Kenshin- of course it's sad! I died!

Sano-I'm gonna miss you, buddybursts out crying

Me-So Sano's a little drunk again. So?

Kaoru- Yay! Kenji's been born! Yay!

Yahiko-I'm not even gonna ask.
