They were sitting together, gazing up at the endless sky when he asked the question.

"Do you believe in heaven, Fae?"

She turned in his arms to face him. "Heaven?"

Fiyero nodded, bring a finger to smooth over the soft skin of her cheek. "Yes, heaven. Do you think it exists?"

The green girl shrugged. "I'm not sure. I suppose it depends on what you mean."

She received a perplexed stare from her lover. "I don't understand."

Biting back a laugh, she explained, "It depends on what you mean by heaven. Religion, for example. The part of me that has rejected the entire notion of Unionism would scoff at the very idea of it's existence."

The Prince nodded. "So you don't believe it's out there?"

Elphaba shrugged again. "Not necessarily. To some people, it's a state of mind. A place of perfect peace where everything is right for them."

"So that's what you think it is?"

Another shrug. "I'm not sure. To some, it could even be merely an expression of immense pleasure."

A rogue smile crossed Fiyero's face. "I think I know how that one works."

She rolled her eyes and gave him a hard shove. "While your perverted mind may seem to be grasping the concept, I was thinking more along the lines of Glinda's expression whenever she returned from one of her many shopping sprees. She swore those blasted shops and boutiques were her very own heaven on earth."

"That's another way of looking at it," He pointed out.

She nodded. "I suppose."

"So which one, if any, do you believe in?"

Knowing he wasn't going to relent until he got his answer, she sighed and replied, "I honestly don't know, Fiyero. I suppose they all have their valid points and appealing qualities. But I can't say for sure that I believe that anything that good could actually exist."

A moment of silence and the he said, "I can."

Her surprised gaze flicked to meet his. "How? What has ever given you the slightest notion that such perfection can actually be real?"

His arms tightened around her. "Because I'm living it. Being here. Holding you. This is my heaven."

Elphaba scoffed, but said nothing. Perfectly use to her responses by now, Fiyero simply pulled her closer and gazed up at the stars. Nothing more was said on the subject, but as Elphaba sat within his embrace, head cradled on his shoulder, she couldn't help but contemplate what her lover had said, and finally admitted it to herself as well.

If this was indeed what heaven was, she might become a believer after all.

Review, pretty please?? :)
