"Mommy, why can't we go back to England?" a little girl asked her mother curiously. She had been playing outside just a few minutes ago and saw a little orange bird in the tree. It reminded her of her grandfather's orange fire bird, and she wanted to go and see it again.
Her mother bustled around the table, her hair piled on top of her head and cutlery in her hands. "It's not safe in England right now, honey," her mother said as she set the table.
Her mother always said that when she asked. "But Grandma and Grandpa are still in England and it's safe for them," the child tried to reason.
Her mother looked over at her and said, "Grandma and Grandpa can't leave England. They're both very important there. If they left, no one one would be there to protect the rest of the little girls and boys at their school."
"Are Grandma and Grandpa heroes?" the girl asked.
Her mother nodded with a strange smile, "Yes, they are. People look up to them, especially Grandpa. They're needed there more than they're needed here."
The little girl frowned though. "But I need them here," she said quietly, tears coming to her eyes. She couldn't even remember the last time she had seen him and Grandma. A lot had happened during the last months of her five-year-old life.
The mother finished the final setting before coming over to pick up her little girl. "Don't worry, dear. One day, we'll go back to England and you can be with Grandpa and Grandma all the time. You'll go to school and see them there all the time."
What the little girl didn't know was the horrible circumstances that would lead to her return: the fire and the screams as her mother burnt in the house and her father killed in her front yard as he tried to run away with her. She would return to England to her grandparents but they would be her only living relatives, Albus Dumbledore and Minerva McGonagall, and meet a whole new world of witches and wizards, unsure of who could be trusted.
For now, she was just a little girl who was happy with the possibility in the future. So she smiled at her mother's words and asked, "Promise?"
Her mother kissed her cheek, "Promise." She placed her daughter back on the ground. "Now, do you want to see what Grandpa sent for you?"
The girl's eyes lit up and she nodded her head excitedly. Grandpa always gave her the best presents from all his trips and the people who visited him. She had gotten a little magnifying glass to see the ants up close and she had gotten many big bags of candy.
Her mother went into the kitchen and brought the girl a little bag. Oh it was candy! However, the smile on the girl's face fell when she opened it. "Gross!"
Her mother laughed and asked, "What's wrong?"
"He got me lemon drops again!" she cried, sticking out her tongue before handing the bag back to her mother. She didn't understand how her Grandpa could love them so much. They were so sour and made her want to drink lots of water.
Her mother smiled down at her and said, "You know how much your Grandpa likes lemon, dear."
