She looked on with tears in her eyes as he took a stand in front of her. As the spell passed over him, she screamed.
They were surrounded and she could see no way out. Suddenly Remus ran over and took up where James had failed.
Now we both know.
The secrets bared,
The feelings show.
Just as Remus started dueling, the cloaked figures disapparated. Lily looked around and then her pain returned full-on as she looked at the still body of James.
"No, he can't be gone," she moaned and jumped up. She fell to her knees and lifted his head to her lap.
Driven far apart,
I'll make a wish,
On a shooting star.
He raised a hand and ran it over her cheek. As he looked at her, the tears fell unashamedly down her face.
"Don't leave me now; I wouldn't know what to do without you," she whispered, letting her head fall against his chest.

Remus cleared his throat. He was loath to break the moment but he felt that she was letting her feelings control her actions.
"Help is on the way, I thought you might want to know," he said, and she wiped at her eyes.
As the healer ran his wand over James' body and healed any of the wounds he found, he looked at Lily. "Your friend is very lucky," he said, "The spell he got hit with was meant to kill."
Lily looked at the almost lifeless body of James, and felt the tears begin to choke her.
He was still alive.
Thus it was the first time they defied Lord Voldemort.
