A small vial was placed at his lips. "Drink this..." A silky voice whispered.
Like a babe to a teat clear liquid slipped into his mouth and down his throat, some leaking from red slit flesh onto pale skin.
As if reading his mind the baritone answered. "You won't be alone."
The pain was starting to fade. Blurry images that his ill-sighted eyes beheld pooled into color without shape. The war drums beating in his ears began to dim. All the injustices and cruelties he had suffered ceased to have meaning as he drifted off on wings of numb mercy.
