Maximum Ride Short Story #2

By: Krysta Paddock

Today we were going to the fair. I know, I know. You are probably thinking, why is a group of kids with wings going to a fair? Well for starters Angel, Nudge and Gazzy, were well, young. They have never been to the fair, so they were all pumped up. If it was up to me, I would have passed and stayed home. But since it was my flock that wanted to go, I couldn't resist.

"Hey Max, can we go on the bumper cars next?" Nudge asked, jumping up and down. "I have always wanted to go on the bumper cars."

I sighed. We have been here for three hours now, riding rides back to back. Angel held a tub of cotton candy, filling her mouth with the pink cloud of fluff. Gazzy was looking around in wonder, still shocked at the whole experience. Iggy looked slightly confused, glancing around nervously and holding on to Fang's sleeve. Fang watched me with a hint of entertainment in his eyes.

"You are enjoying every minute of this aren't you?" I asked him, smiling. He gave me a small smile back, flicking hair out of his eyes.

"Ok Nudge, we can. But I am almost done. I think the next thing we should ride is the Ferris wheel. I heard it was really fun. We can do that and then go home. Sounds good?"

"Ok Max," the flock answered. I followed Angel to the bummer cars, just wanting this day to be over.

As we headed for the Ferris wheel, a thought suddenly struck me. Only two people could go in each cart. Who would ride with me? Angel, hands now washed and cotton candy gone, was holding Gazzy's hand. Nudge and Iggy were deep in conversation about something. So that left me and Fang. I glanced at him out of the corner of my eyes. A small smile played across his lips. Upon sensing my glaze, his eyes met mine. I blushed, turning away.

As we reached the Ferris wheel, I allowed Angel and Gazzy to go in the first cart and Nudge and Iggy to go in the second cart. When it was our turn to get on the cart, Fang led the way, sitting on the bench on the right. I sat on the left one.

The ride was silent. I looked down at the bench and saw an engraving there. "If you kiss at the top, you will forever be in love." I blushed, glancing at Fang. What I saw struck me. He was looking out the window, a look of pure contentment on his face. The light shown on his jet black hair, giving it a glossy look.

He turned to me and noticed my condition. I knew what he saw. A girl blushing a bright red, looking at him and feeling nervous. He chuckled, standing up and sitting next to me. We were almost to the top. He looked me in the eyes. His hand reached up and brushed hair out of my face. I gasped, clearly shocked at his gentleness.

He slowly leaned forward, looking into my eyes as if to ask if it was ok. I sighed, slowly closing my eyes. As his lips met mine I felt like I could fly (which I could already do but you get the idea). I responded, moving my lips to match his. I gasped as he moved his lips down my face to my neck. I shuddered with pure excitement and joy. I glanced out the window and noticed that we were at the top. I giggled. He lifted his head, clearly shocked at the outburst but soon a smile crept across his face.

We stayed like that for a while, locked in an embrace no one could tare apart. My heart beat wildly, my breaths coming in short gasps. His breath matched mine, fast and urgent as he grasped me tight to his chest. I let my wings out, just enough to where he could feel them. He stroked my feathers, which felt so good I gasped. His smile grew and his eyes twinkled.

Almost to the end we broke apart, longing to stay like this forever. He rubbed up and down my arm, making me shiver. Then we let go, sitting on opposite benches.

The only thing that touched were our hands, intertwined for eternity.
