Reaper: Yo, the name is InnerReaper, but you can call me Reaper. This is my first Young Justice story, and it is a Wally/OC. If you don't like OC stories then please don't read just so you can leave a nasty comment. I've had that happen to be before when I wrote other OC stories, and I quit those. I mean, some of those reviews were pretty nasty, and they were all about me adding an OC. Not about how the OC was as a character or even what the story was like. Just the fact that there was an OC in the story...anyway, rant over now. I just hope you like the story, and any review is welcomed as long as it's not a flame. Let's remember our netiquette, people!
WASHINGTON DC
JULY 4, 2010
14:00 EDT
"I can't we're the first to arrive." An annoyed teenager said with her hands on her hips. "I mean, I'm not saying we have a tendency to be late, but we're never first! And if GA and Speedy just asked for help, they'd be here too!"
Black Canary chuckled at her ward/protege as the platinum blonde girl let out an annoyed sigh. Her dear daughter had recently just turned fifteen, and was just reaching past her shoulder in height. Her platinum blonde hair was cut boyishly short except for her side-bangs which went down to her chin and curled up slightly. Her eyes, which weren't covered by a mask, were a pale, almost icy, blue. Her skin was slightly tanned though not much, and her form lean from the hours of training.
She had on a black sleeveless catsuit that had a black hood attached, and it was left down at the moment. A dark grey belt was around her waist, and clipped to the back horizontally was what appeared to be a two foot black metal stick. Then across her chest were grey straps crossed like an 'X' to hold her two twin katana, which were crossed on her back. On her feet were black combat books, and on her hands dark grey fingerless gloves that went up past her elbows.
"You know them, Shade." Canary said. "They like to handle things on their own, especially Speedy."
Shade snorted at the mention of her 'older brother' as she crossed her arms over her chest.
"And we're here, so stop your moaning." Speedy said as he and Green Arrow appeared.
Shade frowned up at the tall ginger, and he looked back at her unimpressed. If there weren't reporters and fans around, she's whack that annyoing look off his face.
"Just got here, and they're already getting ready for a showdown." A voice said with a cackle.
The two Star City proteges turned to see Robin standing beside Shade with a grin on his face.
"What can I say? I live to argue with my big brother." Shade said adding a baby voice at the end as she blinked up at Speedy cutely.
The young archer rolled his eyes at her from underneath his mask, but he said nothing, which had her frowning at him.
"It seems we are not the last here."
Everyone glanced back seeing Aquaman and Aqualad walking up towards the group. The older heroes greeted Aquaman, and Shade smiled at Aqualad as he stepped up beside Speedy. The dark-skinned boy smiled at her in return as their mentors conversed for a moment. Batman then placed a hand on Robin's shoulder getting the youth to look back at him.
"Today's the day." He said with a slightly proud tone.
Robin grinned in return as Canary placed her arm around Shade's shoulders.
"Welcome to the Hall of Justice." Green Arrow said grinning at Speedy and Shade.
"Headquarters of the Justice League." Aquaman added.
Speedy and Shade exchanged a small glance since the both of them knew that the Hall really wasn't headquarters. Shade then wondered if they'd be using the zeta tube to get to the Watch Tower.
"Aw, man!" Kid Flash exclaimed as the two speedsters appeared beside the group. "I knew we'd be the last ones here!"
Flash just grinned down at his protege/nephew in amusement as Shade and Robin snorted at their friend. Kid Flash looked over at the both of them, and he grinned when seeing Shade.
"Hello, Beautiful, miss me?" Kid asked zooming over to her to throw his arm over her shoulders.
"Not really." Shade replied.
Kid Flash pouted at her before stiffening when he felt a killing intent from behind him. He glanced over his shoulder to see that Speedy was glaring down at him. Shade chuckled as Kid cautiously let her go while stepping away from her afterwards. They all then started heading towards the Hall as people started taking pictures and chatting excitedly.
"Is that Batman?" Someone asked.
"No, it's the Easter Bunny." Shade quipped under her breath.
Robin heard her though, and he snickered behind his hand with his shoulders shaking lightly.
"It's Flash and Flash Junior!" Someone cried out.
Shade looked at Kid Flash to see him frowning that his name had been gotten wrong...again, and she pat his shoulder in a consoling manner.
"His name is Speedy, duh." Another person said.
This had Kid Flash frowning even more, and Shade knew all the shoulder patting in the world wouldn't help.
"No, Speedy's Green Arrow's sidekick."
Speedy glared over at the person who used the forbidden 's' word, but the guy didn't even seem to notice.
"That doesn't make any sense!"
Speedy's glare intensified, and Shade shook her head at her older brother's temper.
"Man, Shade is so hot!" A guy whispered very loudly to his friend. "I wouldn't mind a little one-on-one with her, ya know what I mean?"
Shade rolled her eyes while tugging Speedy along before he could go over to that guy. Even if the two bickered constantly, Speedy was very protective of his little sister.
"Ignore the pig." Shade whispered to Speedy.
He nodded curtly though he threw one more glare at the guy checking out Shade.
"Ready to see inside?" Green Arrow asked the both of them.
"Born ready." Speedy said.
"You know it." Shade said grinning.
The green clad archer chuckled patting Shade on the shoulder as Canary smiled at her.
"I'm glad we're all here." Aqualad commented.
"Have all five sidekicks ever been in the same place at the same time?" Kid Flash asked.
Shade winced knowing he messed up when using the 's' word in front of Speedy.
"Don't call us sidekicks." Speedy said harshly. "Not after today."
"Sorry," Kid apologized. "It's my first time at the Hall. I'm a little overwhelmed."
"You're overwhelmed, Freeze was underwhelmed, why isn't anyone just whelmed?" Robin asked with a sigh.
"Because, to be whelmed means to be submerged under water, Birdie." Shade informed him.
Robin frowned at her for messing with his word-play, and she grinned at him in return. He gave her a look of determination, and she sighed knowing he wasn't about to back down about this whole 'whelmed' thing. They then entered the Hall, and the teens looked at the large statues of the original Justice League with awed expressions. They approached the doors that read 'Authorized Personnel Only', and when the doors opened, they revealed Red Tornado and Martian Manhunter.
"Robin, Speedy, Shade, Aqualad, Kid Flash," Manhunter greeted. "Welcome."
Kid and Robin exchanged a fist bump, and Shade shook her head at the two of them. They went inside with the doors shutting behind them. Manhunter gave them the tour, and it ended as they reached the library, which was another room they were given full access to according to Manhunter.
"Make yourselves at home." Flash said spreading out his arms.
Kid and Robin both plopped down into two of the three chairs, and Aqualad calmly sat down in the last one. Speedy and Shade remained standing as the latter crossed her arms over her chest. When Batman mentioned a briefing of why four ice villains attacked on the same day, Shade and Speedy frowned as they exchanged a glance. Was this really it? What about the Watch Tower? Weren't they getting to go there as well? The two Star City proteges watched the Leaguers, including their mentors/partners, get scanned, and that's when Speedy decided to say something.
"That's it?!" He demanded as he stepped up. "You promised a real look inside, not a glorified backstage pass."
Shade, even if she wouldn't have raised her voice right off the bat, nodded to back up Speedy.
"It's a first step." Aquaman said. "You've been given access on what few others get."
"No disrespect, sir, but we only swapped one side of the glass for another." Shade said calmly as she gestured to the tourist at the window taking pictures of them.
Speedy was quick to agree with her, and their mentors both exchanged a glance.
"Roy, Tabitha, you both just need to be a little patient." Green Arrow said.
"What we need is respect!" Speedy retorted then turned to the other proteges. "They're treating us like kids...no worse! They're treating us like sidekicks! We deserve better than this."
While Shade could almost completely agree with Speedy, she did not agree with how he's arguing their case. He needs to remain calm, but he's always had quite the temper.
"You're kidding, right?" Speedy deadpanned when the others said nothing. "Today is supposed to be the day! Step one in becoming full-fledged members of the league."
"Well, sure, but I thought step one was a tour of HQ." Kid Flash said while sitting up a bit straighter.
Shade and Speedy exchanged another glance while guessing the other three were in the dark about the Watch Tower.
"Hate it break it to you, but this isn't the real HQ." Shade said. "The real one is in space, and it's called the Watch Tower."
"Yeah, this is just a place for tourists to come, and pit-stop to zeta up to the real thing!" Speedy added.
"You're not helping your cause, son." Aquaman said. "Stand down."
Shade shook her head at the Atlantian because Speedy didn't like getting orders from Green Arrow, and he absolutely did not listen to anyone else giving orders either.
"I'm not your son." Speedy said through gritted teeth. "I'm not even his. I thought I was his partner, but not anymore."
Shade's eyes widened as Speedy threw his hat onto the ground before turning to leave.
"Come on, Shade." Speedy said walking towards the door, but he paused to look at the other sidekicks. "I guess they were right about you three. You're not ready."
Shade looked to Speedy then Canary and Green Arrow before following after the older teenager. She didn't plan on leaving with him, no she wanted to try and bring him back. Once she caught up with him, she caught his arm to pull him to a stop. They were in the hallway leading to the inner hall, and the tourist section with two thick metal doors keeping them separated from the outside.
"Roy, I'm upset like you, but...are you sure leaving Ollie is the best solution?" Shade asked. "I mean, do you even know where you're going to go?"
"Are you seriously going to stay with them?" He asked Shade with a frown on his face. "They don't respect us, Tabi! They think of us as kids!"
Shade wanted to say that the way he acted and the way he stormed away was acting like a child, but she wasn't trying to get him angry. She was trying to calm him down.
"Are you coming or not?" Speedy asked after a moment of silence.
"...I'm sorry, Roy, but I can't leave Dinah and Ollie." Shade said shaking her head. "They're our family."
"Tch, you're just not ready like the rest of them." He said pulling his arm away from her.
Shade felt tears prick her eyes, and Speedy's expression softened as he gave a sigh.
"I'll see you around." He promised before giving her a brief hug.
He then left out the door, and Shade sighed while ignoring the camera flashes directed at her and him. Once the doors closed again, she put her back against the wall with a sigh leaving her lips once more. She just stood there a moment to collect her thoughts when she heard approaching steps. She looked up as the rest of the proteges came around the corner.
"Shade, you didn't leave!" Robin said grinning.
"Nah...I just wanted to try and convince Speedy to stay, but I was unsuccessful." Shade said shrugging while looking bummed.
Kid zoomed to her side to put his arm around her shoulders, and she looked up at him to see he was smiling genuinely, not flirtatious.
"Don't worry, Shade, I'm sure he'll come around." He said. "Now, we have a way to cheer you up. How about a mission?"
Shade blinked curiously, and Robin launched into what she had missed when she left after Speedy.
"So, you three what to go investigate this Cadmus place without permission after the Leaguers, our mentors, told us to stay put?" Shade summarized.
"Well, technically, they only told the three of us, not you." Robin said. "And they only said to stay put for the blotting out the sun mission...Canary and Green Arrow also think you went renegade like Speedy."
Shade sighed before telling the boys she was in, which had Kid Flash and Robin sharing a high five. She was mostly going to keep an eye on them, and it wasn't like her mentor or GA were expecting her to be here when they got back.
"We are happy to have you joining us." Aqualad said.
"Yeah, well, I'm not about to leave you alone to watch them." Shade said pointing to Kid and Robin. "They can be a handful."
"Shade!" The two cried indignantly.
The group of four arrived at the Cadmus facility, which was on fire, to see two scientist stuck in a window. Firefighters were on their way to get them when an explosion caused them to fly out the window. Kid Flash ran ahead to grab them, and run them up to the roof of the building. Gravity started dragging him down, and he had to grab the window to keep him from hitting the ground.
"It's whats-his-name!" The chief firefighter called out. "Flash Boy!"
Shade snorted in amusement as she, Robin, and Aqualad stood by a building a few yards away.
"So smooth." Robin said with a sarcastic smirk.
"Does he always have to run ahead?" Aqualad asked with a sigh. "We need a plan...we need-"
"Sorry to interrupt, Aqualad, but Robin just left." Shade said as a cackle entered the air.
Aqualad frowned while watching the Boy Wonder jump onto the firetruck then up the ladder before firing his grappling gun to swing into the window where Kid Flash was hanging. He pulled the older boy up, and the two disappeared into the window.
"Yeah, he does that a lot." Shade said when seeing Aqualad's confused expression. "Now shall we?"
She jerked her thumb towards the burning building, and Aqualad sighed while nodding his head. The two ran forward, and while Aqualad went towards the firefighters, Shade took the same route Robin did. Though instead of going towards the window, she went onto the roof with the aid of her own grappling hook and rope. However, hers wasn't fired from a gun.
"Evening, sirs." She said grinning at them. "Shall we get you down?"
They nodded their heads, and that's when Aqualad appeared while riding on a tower of water he formed with his water-bearers.
"Get on, now." He said firmly.
Shade helped the two men onto the water then signaled for Aqualad to take them down. As he was doing that, Shade went down her rope to swing into the window. She landed inside with ease to see Robin hacking some files, and Kid Flash using super speed to search the room.
"Appreciate the help." Aqualad said as he joined them.
"Hey, you handled it." Robin said while not even looking away from his work. "Besides, we're here to investigate. Poetic justice, remember?"
Shade rolled her eyes at the youngest hero before going out to check the hall with Aqualad right behind her. The two heard a ding, and they looked toward the elevator, which should have been shut down, to see some kind of odd creature inside as the doors shut.
"You saw that too, right?" Shade asked.
Aqualad nodded his head as Kid Flash zoomed out of the room to join them.
"Elevators should be locked down." Kid said as Robin rushed from the room.
The Boy Wonder ran over to the elevator, and the rest of them followed at a slower pace. Robin started doing his hacking job, and Shade looked over his shoulder to see what he was doing.
"This is wrong." He said.
"I'll say." Shade said while looking at his holographic data. "This is a high speed express elevator, which doesn't belong in a two story building."
Robin nodded his head in agreement as he continued pressing buttons on his holographic keyboard.
"Neither does what Shade and I saw." Aqualad said.
He then forced the elevator door open to allow the teens to look down inside.
"And that's why they need an express elevator." Robin said.
Shade nodded then watched as Robin used his grappling gun again to hook it to the top of the elevator shaft. He started going down in the shaft, and Shade jumped forward to grab the rope to follow after him. Aqualad and Kid Flash were right behind them, and when Robin reached the end of his rope, they reached a door that had '26' on it.
"I'm guessing this is our stop." Shade said.
"Yep." Robin said then jumped over to the small platform that jutted out of the wall.
Shade followed him onto the platform, and got out of the way, so Aqualad could to the same. When Kid Flash jumped over, Aqualad and Shade pulled him onto it, so he wouldn't fall. Robin did his hacking thing to bypass security, and Aqualad pryed open the doors once he was finished.
"Welcome to Project Cadmis." Robin said as they stepped inside.
Shade looked around at the rows of machenery while wondering what was going on down here. Probably something no good if Cadmus is hiding all the way down here. Kid Flash took off running without warning, and didn't stop when Aqualad called out to him. Shade shook her head then her eyes widened when seeing that Kid was heading straight towards mammoth sized monsters.
"Kid, stop!" She called.
The speedster barely stopped in time, and ended up tripping onto his back as the monsters went by. The others caught up, and Shade noticed smaller monsters on the shoulders of the bigger ones. She frowned when its horns and eyes lit up, which couldn't mean anything good for them.
"No, nothing goin on here." Aqualad said with sarcasm as the large beasts moved on past them.
"Let's just get moving before something else comes along." Shade said. "That little creature...when it looked at us, I got the feeling it sent out some kind of warning."
The others agreed it was time to move, and using Robin's hacking skills they moved through rooms rather easily. They came to another room, and when Robin opened the doors this time, their eyes widened. There had to be over four dozen rows of glass casing, and inside where these large mutated insect looking creatures giving off electricity.
"I'm offically whelmed." Robin said as the group of four looked around.
"This is how they hide this huge facility from the world." Kid Flash said stepping up to one of the glass tubes. "The real Cadmus isn't on the grid. It generates its own power with these things."
"Must be what they're bred for." Shade said with a frown.
She placed her hand on the glass while wondering what kind of person would be so cruel to bottle up these creatures. Sure, they were freaky looking, but they were still living beings.
"Even the name is a clue." Aqualad said. "The Cadmus of myth created a new race by sewing dragon's teeth into the earth."
"And this Cadmus creates new life too." Robin said as he walked over to the computer in the room to use his hacking skills...again. "Let's find out why."
Shade moved away from the tubes to stand beside Kid Flash who was standing behind Robin.
"They call them Genomorphs." Robin said. "Holy crap, look at the stats on these things! Super strength, telepathy, razor claws...they're breeding weapons!"
"They're generating an army...but for who?" Kid Flash asked.
Robin then said there was something else, a project called Kr, and Shade leaned forward in interest. Robin tried to hack through, but that was when they were caught.
"Don't move!" A deep voice ordered.
The teenage heroes turned around seeing Guardian standing there with some of those mentioned weapons.
"Wait...Robin? Aqualad? Shade? Kid Flash?" Guardian asked looking confused.
"At least he got your name right." Robin said teasingly.
He then got back to hacking as his three companions faced Guardian and his genomorph friends.
"I know you." Aqualad said. "You're Guardian, a hero."
"I do my best." Guardian said modestly.
"Then what are you doing here?" Kid Flash demanded.
"I'm chief of security." Guardian explained. "You're trespassing, but we can call the Justice League...figure this out."
Shade grimaced at the thought of her mentor and Green Arrow being called because that meant she'd be in deep shit.
"You think the League is going to approve of you breeding weapons?" Kid asked glaring.
"Weapons?" Guardian asked looking troubled.
He looked confused for a moment, but Shade noticed that after the little guy's, who was on his shoulder, horns glowed, Guardian's expression cleared up. He ordered for the teens to be taken down, and Shade frowned as she took the two foot pole off her back. The larger creatures jumped at them, and she swung the pole out with it extending. Though before they hit, Robin threw down a smoke bomb blinding everyone for a second. Shade was barely able to block one of those creatures, and she sighed knowing the Boy Wonder had fled.
She shook her head having no time to think about that as she flipped the monster off her. She ducked down then spun around to send her foot into the face of another. She jumped over one using her pole to send her farther into the air. As she was coming back towards the ground, she planted her feet in the back of another Genomorph, which sent it to the ground.
She was then pulled along by Aqualad as he and Kid Flash started to go in the direction Robin left. Shade pulled her arm away from the Atlantian to run on her own. They caught up to Robin, who was hacking another elevator, and Shade rolled her eyes. She knew he'd be here. Once the doors were open, they all jumped inside before they could get caught by those Genomorphs.
"We're heading down?" Aqualad asked getting Kid and Shade's attentions.
They looked seeing that the numbers were going up, which meant they were going down.
"Dude, out is up!" Kid Flash said pointing.
"Project Kr is down in sub-level 52." Robin said.
"Rob, if you hadn't noticed, we're already in a world of trouble." Shade said. "We should have went up, and then reported what we found to our mentors."
Robin frowned up at Shade, and she frowned right back at him. Aqualad sighed while suggesting they call the League, but that's when they reached sub-level 52. Robin went out the doors without a second thought, and this caused Shade to pinch the bridge of her nose.
"We are already here." Kid Flash said before speeding after Robin.
"We better go after them before they end up in even more trouble." Shade said.
Aqualad watched her leave, and he frowned. He, however, knew that she was right, so he went after them. The four of them came to a fork in the road of the fleshy looking facility, and Shade crossed her arms over her chest.
"Which way?" Aqualad asked.
"Yeah, bizarre-looking hallway one or bizarre-looking hallway two?" Robin asked.
Someone shouted at them to halt from hallway one, and when he started throwing things with his mind, the teens ran down bizarre-looking hallway two. When Shade and Robin caught up to Kid, they saw that he forced the door open with some kind of container.
"Hurry!" Kid Flash said.
The two ducked inside, and Aqualad soon joined them. He kicked the container out of the way, which caused the doors to slam shut.
"I disabled the door." Robin said. "We're safe."
"Trapped." Shade and Aqualad corrected.
The Boy Wonder shook his head at the older teens thinking they worried about the details too much. As if knowing what he was thinking, Shade narrowed her eyes at him.
"Guys," Kid Flash called out getting their attentions. "You're gonna wanna see this."
The three teens turned seeing a pod with Kr printed on the front, and inside a younger version of Superman...in a white suit with a 'S' on the front. Shade stepped forward with wide eyes to place her hand on the cool glass.
"Big K, little r." Kid Flash said stepping up behind Shade. "The atomic symbol for Krypton."
"Is he a clone?" Shade asked glancing back at Robin.
Aqualad ordered Robin to hack, and the Boy Wonder got to doing as he was asked. Robin explained he was called Superboy, a clone acquired from Superman's DNA.
"Stolen from Superman." Aqualad corrected.
"No way the big guy knows about this." Kid said.
Robin continued to explain that the suit he had on was solar, which allowed him to absorb yellow sun radiation 24/7. Shade inquired about the tiny little creatures in the pod, and Robin explained they were more genomorphs. They were giving Superboy an education and giving him information.
"They're making a slave...out of Superman's son." Kid Flash said.
"Now we contact the League." Aqualad said firmly.
He touched the belt-buckle on his belt, but only got static as a reply. The two other boys got the same, and when they turned towards Shade, she shook her head.
"No signal." Robin said.
"We're in too deep." Kid Flash said.
"Literally." Shade said.
The four then turned towards the pod containing Superboy, and Shade crossed her arms over her chest.
"This is wrong." Kid said.
"We can't leave him like this." Robin added.
Aqualad turned towards Shade for her opinion, and she nodded her head in agreement. Aqualad finally gave the order to set him free, and Robin quickly opened the pod. Shade stepped forward curiously as Superboy's eyes snapped open to look at them. He suddenly jumped forward, and Shade barely ducked down in time. Superboy hit Aqualad head on, which caused them to go into the floor. He started punching the dark-skinned boy without mercy. Shade was quick to run forward with Kid Flash and Robin doing the same. The two boys tried to pull the clone off their friend, but he wasn't moving at inch.
"Sorry about this." Shade said as she pulled something out of her belt.
She sprayed some kind of substance in Superboy's eyes, and he roared while letting go of Aqualad. Shade quickly kicked Superboy in the chest, and since he wasn't prepared for it, he went flying.
"What'd you spray with him?" Robin asked as the clone started getting off the ground.
"Pepper spray." Shade said. "A girl's best friend."
She then had to duck down when Superboy jumped at her, but it didn't help her much since he grabbed her hood. She gasped as he started spinning her around by her hood, which had her choking slightly. He her go, and she went soaring into the air before hitting a wall. The wind was knocked right out of her as she hit the ground feeling as sore as hell.
"Ow." she deadpanned as the darkness took her.
Reaper: So? Did you like it? Let me know in a review, kay? Remember criticism is welcomed, but no flames. There's a huge difference, people.
