Tom Baker opened up the door to his home. After 12 jobs, he had finally found the perfect one. He was just a local coach, but it meant he could be around the house.
"Where are my children, Mrs. Baker?" Tom twirled his wife in to a kiss and then routinely all 10 children still living at home ran down the stairs.
"Oh hey, dad, did you bring dinner?" Nigel sent a hopeful look to his father. Before Tom could answer his witty daughter took the liberty to.
"Obviously not Nigel, his hands aren't full." Sarah still had ever bit of attitude that she ever had. No one ever took offense to it, however, because it was known just to be the way that she would show affection.
"Well kids, I guess then, that you don't want any of the famous chicken that I got down at the school."
"Daaad, don't do this to us, just tell use what we have to make for dinner." Jake put his hands on his hips, awaiting a reply.
"Dinner is in the car." Tom Tossed the keys at Lorraine and suddenly a stampede of 10 children raced out of the front door.
Most nights went like that one, where all the homework would be done before six and Tom would arrive with a smile. Then there were the unusual, morose, and terrifying nights. Sadly, this is the story of one long chain of them.
Sarah Baker slid through the hallways on her socks until she came to a stop in front of the bathroom door. Like every other morning she picked up her lacrosse stick that was leaning on the wall and hit the door as if trying to break it down.
"Lorraine, I swear! Get out of there; it was time to go like ten minutes ago." The oldest baker child in the house opened the door and almost suffered a blow to the head.
"Watch it Sarah! I'm out of here, now do you want a ride or not?" Lorraine grabbed her bag and keys while still putting lip gloss on.
"Of course, it's too late to bike there anyway." Sarah was getting her backpack when she noticed Jake's closed door. "Hey you in there, you better be ready. The taxi is on her way out!"
A muffled, "Just go, I'll skate there", came from Jake's room. Inside, Jake was still in bed. He rolled over on the floor. Through the wood he could hear all of his siblings packing lunch and eating breakfast. When all were out of the house he lazily dragged himself to the bathroom.
He wasn't going to school anyway, so there was no reason for him to hurry. As he was brushing his teeth he heard someone fall down a flight of stairs.
"Oh, blast it! My model of the solar system!" Mark had been left behind because of the mistake he had noticed with the planet Jupiter.
"Jake? What are you still doing here?" Stopping to Slip on his jacket and pick up his project he had noticed his brother almost missing his teeth with the toothbrush.
"Jus' woke up late, man. That's all." He spit out a mouthful of paste and wiped the edges of his lips.
"Alright, well, I'm late too and I need to go. See you later." At last Jake was alone in the house but he wasn't going to stay. He and his friends all had tickets to a concert downtown. Of course Jake's parents had no idea, just how he liked it.
However, if Jake had known he would encounter such trouble, he would be on his way to school right now.
