"Stay here." Shadow strayed from Rouge and approached Midnight slowly and knelt down beside her. "Are you alright?"

She lifted her head slowly to look at him, "What?" you could tell by her voice that she felt very weak.

"Are you alright?"

"Who are you? Why are you here?"

"My name is Shadow. You may not know it yet, but we're a lot alike."

"What do you mean?"

"You were referred to as "project" right?

"……yes."

"Me too. You see, you and I are not like the others."

"Others?" He pointed to a body and Rouge who was standing high up on the roof of the base.

"We're not human and we're not…a sub species. We are creations." She stood up and Shadow followed. Then she looked him right in the eyes and began to cry. This took him back. No one had ever looked him in the eyes before.

"But I can't be!" her words were muffled with sadness and she began to choke on her tears. For the first time Shadow felt true pity and understanding. He embraced her and whispered into her ear.

"Take a look at that puddle over there. Tell me what you see." She broke off from his embrace and walked over to the puddle. She knelt down and looked deeply into it.

"…I see….black….something….not……human." her words began to fade away. This time she hugged him. She started to cry once more but now as she cried heavy rain began to down pour. "Why Shadow? Why did it have to be us? It could have been anyone else in the world….but it happened to you and I. We're …..freaks!" They stood there for a long time just holding on to each other. Holding on to a great understanding. The rain stopped. She had come to terms.
