A roar of agony rented the air just as they were about to take off. It chilled their blood. Katara was the quickest but what they found horrified them. There sat their arch enemy, crouched over a burnt body.
A smaller, clearly female, one was crumpled nearby.
Zuko was sobbing over the body of Iroh. Sokka stepped on a twig, crunching it beneath his foot. The Fire Prince whipped around, facing them.
"Leave," he snarled; a maddened look in his eye, "go."
"Zuko," Katara started timidly. He was their enemy true, but he was clearly in pain over the death of perhaps his last friend on earth. "We wanna help."
"Help?" Zuko laughed manically, "He's dead. Surely even a peasant can tell that."
"Toph."
The Blind Bandit nodded and stomped forward, making both corpses sink into the earth.
"YOU LITTLE—!" Zuko shouted, completely lost in his grief.
"Stand back! Now!" Katara ordered of her group.
"But Katara—" Aang tried to protest.
"I can handle him." she smiled softly. She confidently strode forward, falling into her bending stance, "We still have to have a rematch from Ba Sing Se."
He laughed, "Whatever you want Peasant!"
Her eyes narrowed and she attacked. They traded blows; his were becoming more erratic as time went on.
"Toph duck!" Aang yelled even as he threw the earthbender down.
Katara had to finish this soon, it was getting too dangerous. Seeing an opening she ran up, grabbed his hands, and crashed her lips to his.
The idea behind these moves was to shock him and to block his fire. Her icy breath halted his fire breath and her hands cooled his.
But surprisingly he began kissing back, letting his feelings for the brave little waterbender free.
Sokka, Aang, and Toph watched, or in Toph's case felt, incredulously. Sokka passed out followed by Aang. Toph smirked and grabbed the back of their clothes before dragging them back to camp.
Zuko and Katara didn't notice though as they broke for air.
Their souls knew each other. The wind seemed to sing "Two Lovers/Forbidden from one another/ a war divides their people/A mountain divides them apart/Built a path to be together…"
The trees swade to the ancient song of eternal love as it thrummed in their veins and their hearts beat as one.
"Oma…"he breathed, his once golden eyes now brown.
"Shu…" she replied her now green eyes welling with tears as she embraced him.
"Shhh Koishii," he comforted her, "we've found each again."
"B-but what if it happens again?" she sobbed.
"Oma," he said forcing her to look in his eyes, "I'm not leaving you again. The Avatar will stop this war I know it. We will be together this time."
He closed his eyes, seeming to struggle with his new body. "Oma," he whispered, "this prince, he fights. We have to recede…"
"No!" she said desperately, but she too could feel that new bit of her soul beginning to fight her hold on this form, "We have another chance, we have to take it."
"We don't belong in control this time, Koishii. But this boy wants your girl, our love lives on. Even though we have different names, our story repeats… only this time the ending will be different." And he kissed her passionately once more as they receded.
But Katara and Zuko did not break the contact. Until they needed air.
"Why does it seem like I know you from before?" she asked as they caught their breath.
"Because I've hunted you Peasant." he replied bluntly.
She rolled her eyes, "I know that, I mean before before…"
"Before before?"
"I can't really explain it…"
"SUGARQUEEN, HOTHEAD! LUNCH IS READY!" came the shout. Katara smiled and turned away tugging him along with her.
From somewhere in the spirit world Iroh smiled. Monk Gyastsu then challenged him to a game of Pai Sho.
A/n: The word 'Koishii' is Japanese for Beloved.
