Mello-Near friendship story

--

Authors Notes: I owe blackdragonflower this since shes put up with a lot of my problems in the past. And plus, I have been procrastinating on some collaborations and stories we're doing together (some that I owe her). This is also an apology story to her (and my friends) for lying about some…issues. None of them but her will understand that, but whatever.

Anyways, enjoy this somewhat happy piece.

Near's POV

Sleep is needed for humans to survive, but L managed to live off sugar and no sleep, until his unpredictable and untimely death. Sleep and food is needed for humans to function properly in this universe, which is not what we were taught at Wammy's. To be the best meant to stay up late—maybe even all night—studying, wasting our lives away to become the best…to be the next L.

L.

The only person worthy of my respect, the only person I have respected. Correction, the only other person worthy of my respect, because, in all honesty and now that I think more about it, there is someone else I have respected for a very long time, maybe not when I first met him, but later on. Later on, when he managed to shoot himself way up the list, despite him only being there for maybe three or four weeks. But he could never surpass me, no matter how hard he tried.

"To be number one." He always told the teachers, told his roommate and best friend, Matt, when asked why he does what he does. "To be the best. To surpass L."

And to make someone else proud of him—I have figured that out. He pushed himself so far before that he didn't for over to weeks and ended up in the infirmary from fainting one day in the halls. When I went to visit him, the first thing he said was, "I failed…"

My response, "You didn't fail, you merely proved yourself as an overachiever and that you would do anything to get what you want, to achieve a goal and that in itself is both a good and bad quality in yourself. It'll kill you one day…"

And for a moment, for a small, simple moment, I saw a smile. But it was gone at a double take.

At his grave, I leave a flower. A rose, a single white rose, the most complex of all flowers, but one of the most popular. And a small smile.

"Mihael Keehl, you have achieved to be number one…"
