This is the first Final Fantasy fanfic I've written, and it was originally an English assignment. In fact, it still is. ^_^; I figured I may as well upload it and have *something* on my name, though it's a measly English assignment. Reviews are appreciated, I need some honest critiquing here.

After the battle ended, my body relaxed and the glow disappeared from my fingers. Not one bead of sweat off my brow, I thought. Seconds later, to my surprise, I felt a wave of energy and knowledge sweep over me and a word pop into my head, a light bulb brightening. Ultima… I thought to myself, shocked and amazed. I had learned Ultima, the most powerful spell available to me, not to mention the rest of my kind, the horrors known as Genomes. With grim satisfaction, I realized that my naive, younger brother had no knowledge that I had possession of this spell; much less did he know the existence of it. He doesn't stand a chance, I thought maliciously, as I made my way to the next battle of the training session, pleased with my new ability.

About an hour and a half later, I swept hurriedly into Master Garland's underground laboratory. "Master?" I called down the stairs as I, myself, descended.

"I am here, Kuja," came the reply.

"Master Garland, I learned it!" I said with excitement, more than I had felt in many years, I expect. Of the fifteen years I've lived in this prison of a village, the only joy I've ever truly felt has been when I, personally, have advanced and when I deposited my aforementioned brother to die on Gaia.

"Learned what?" he asked, not turning around from his computations at the control panel.

"Ultima!" I said, annoyed that, from my rare excitement, he couldn't figure this out for himself.

At that, he turned to face me, not saying anything, shock and disbelief clearly written across his face. A foot taller than I, and clad head to foot in black armor, Garland was an intimidating sight. I, personally, had never been impressed. He was simply show and bluff. Your reign is apparent now, but not for long…

"…Kuja, go train some more. Use Ultima sparingly; one day it will hold enough power to destroy a planet." He then turned around and resumed working among the large, vertical, blue tubes that held the sleeping bodies of golden-haired, golden-tailed beings. Golden masterpieces they truly were.

Your planet, surely. Acid thoughts such as these filled my mind as I bowed to his back, glaring, and quickly turned around to exit. As I did so, a young, Genomic girl, Mikoto, she calls herself, ran into me. With a stunned look on her face, I shoved her out of my way, and onto the floor, and made my way up the stairs. Some day, you bastard, Garland, I'll get out of this soulless village. Even if it means killing you and destroying your precious planet.

I entered a battle with an ugly Hecteyes, a smirk of anticipated delight for my guaranteed victory spreading across my lips. I began one more training session in a seemingly endless flow of millions, one more step toward my goal of personal freedom.
