The four penguins and Marlene walked towards the memorial in New York City. They were all in uniform, save Marlene. It was also the middle of the night, since it would've been impossible to go during the day. No one was there, except for them and a girl and her mom.
"Miss you," the girl said quietly, gazing into the water below.
"Come on, sweetie. It's getting late," her mom said.
"Okay..." Then, they slowly walked away, leaving a slience between the animals that seemed impossible to break.
"So?" Marlene finally asked. "This is where it happened?"
"Yeah," Skipper answered.
"And those are the names of the people who died?" Private asked.
"Yup," Kowalski replied.
"Do any of you guys remember it? I was just a pup, then," said Marlene, who was 30 in otter years and 12 in human years.
"I do," Skipper said, who was 35 in penguin years and 14 in human years. "I was back in Antartica. I remember the I.P.M. sending out some troops to New York City to see if there was anything they could do to help,"
"It's just sad to know something like this could happen," Private said.
"Uh-huh!" Rico agreed.
"I know. That's why I'm glad we're here to help make sure something like this would never happen again," Skipper stated, meaning every word.
Then, all four penguins took of their hats and saluted. Marlene did the same. Moments later, they made their way back to the zoo, not saying a word. Although, Rico wistled a few verses of "God Bless America". They would never forget that fateful day. No matter what.
Sorry it's a little rushed. I did all of it today. This was entirely written while I was listening to Coldplay.
