Duncan watched his Little Lily swimming through the waves and thought back on her life. After escaping Neptune they'd settled in Sydney before moving down to Melbourne. They lived in Sandringham and were constantly at the beach. Although Lily was only eight, Duncan could already see more of Meg and Veronica in her than the women she was named after. Little Lily wasn't wild and devious like her aunt. She was sensitive like Meg, but still out there and confident like Veronica had become. Duncan knew that he'd loved Meg, there was no denying that. But on occasion he couldn't help but wonder why he'd first fallen for another slim, blonde, long-haired, cheerleader. Was he so in love with Veronica that she moulded his 'type'? He'd thrown up when he first accepted that Veronica could be his sister. The memories of them kissing, touching…it had made him repulsed with himself. How could he have not known? How could he have not even suspected?
He missed them – all of them. Two of the most important people in his life were dead, and the rest might as well be, he would never see them again. He hoped one day that Little Lily would get to meet Veronica again. But at the same time he was a bit scared about what would've changed if he ever did. Truthfully, Duncan dreaded returning to find that Veronica and Logan were married with kids, or what ever. It would be bad enough seeing Veronica with another guy, but with Logan? Duncan knew how Logan operated. Logan was the ass, the rich conceited play-boy. But more than that Duncan didn't think he'd ever be able to see Veronica and Logan together without thinking about the old days. When it was Logan and Lily, and Veronica and him. Remembering Logan and his sister, it disturbed him to think it was now Veronica and Logan. There little 'Fab Four' group was so twisted. Duncan had been Lily's brother. Lily had been Veronica's best friend. Veronica had been Duncan's girlfriend. Duncan was Logan's best friend. Logan had been Lily's boyfriend. Duncan and Lily may have been Veronica's siblings. Logan and Veronica went out. Logan's Dad killed Lily. There were so many ties between the four of them-which made so many memories, good and bad.
Duncan had promised to teach Little Lily how to surf when she turned ten. She was so looking forward to it. Duncan wished Logan was around to see how eager she was to get out in the waves. Logan was the first one to really get Duncan into surfing. Now it was something he couldn't live without. Australia was great. Duncan and Lily had so many opportunities to swim and surf. Logan would love it.
Maybe one day Duncan will get in contact with his old friends, maybe one day Veronica will track them down, maybe one day Lily will get to meet the most important people in her father's life. But until them Duncan and Lily were left with open waves, endless beached, sand castles and memories.
