Sometimes I think about you
Wonder if you're out there somewhere thinking bout me
And would you even recognize
The woman that your little girl has grown up to be
Cause I look in the mirror and all I see
Are your brown eyes looking back at me
They're the only thing you ever gave to me at all
As Kaitlynn was growing up in the foster system and being moved from foster home to foster home, she wondered about her mom. How her mom could just abandon her daughter at birth like she meant nothing.
When Kaitlynn looks in the mirror, she sees her beautiful green eyes. The ones that Neal said she had gotten from her mom along with her wavy blond hair. Neal said that Kaitlynn is like a miniature version of Emma. Kaitlynn wishes that she didn't look so much like her mom, but like her dad instead. At least her dad had made an effort at raising her, while the only thing her mom ever gave Kaitlynn was her blonde hair and green eyes.
Oh, I hear the weather's nice in California
There's sunny skies as far I can see
If you ever come back home to Carolina
I wonder what you'd say to me
Growing up, Kaitlynn always wondered what Emma would say to her if she ever came back to find her daughter. Somewhere deep down Kaitlynn secretly wished that Emma would come find her, but she also hated Emma and never wanted to see her ever.
I think about how it ain't fair
That you weren't there to braid my hair
Like mothers do
You weren't around to cheer me on
Help me dress for my high school prom
Like mothers do
Did you think I didn't need you here
To hold my hand
To dry my tears
Did you even miss me through the years at all
An all grown up, Kaitlynn thinks about all the things that her mom had missed out on. She missed Kaitlynn's first steps, her first words, loosing her first tooth, her first day of school. Kaitlynn thinks about how Emma wasn't their to braid her hair, like mothers do, and wasn't around to cheer Kaitlynn on when she did gymnastics. She wasn't around to help Kaitlynn dress for her high school prom.
Emma missed out of holding her daughter's hand and wiping away Kaitlynn's tears through all the years. Kaitlynn wonders if her mom knew that she needed her and if she even missed Kaitlynn through all the years.
Oh, I hear the weather's nice in California
There's sunny skies as far I can see
If you ever come back home to Carolina
I wonder what you'd say to me
Kaitlynn daydreams about what Emma would say to her if she ever came to find her. Kaitlynn imagines what she would say and do. Would she hug Emma and say she forgives her? Or would she simply glared at Emma, roll her eyes, and say she hated her and would never forgive her?
Forgiveness is such a simple word
But it's so hard to do when you've been hurt
On some level Kaitlynn wishes she could forgive Emma, but she can't because she has been hurt by so many people. Emma hurt her when she learned that Emma had abandoned her daughter. Neal hurt Kaitlynn when he abandoned her. All Kaitlynn's foster parents and some foster siblings hurt her emotionally, physically, and mentally from all the abuse they put her through.
Oh, I hear the weather's nice in California
And just in case you're wondering about me
From now on I won't be in Carolina
Your little girl is off
Your little girl is off
Your little girl is off to Tennessee
