Underneath the Moon
"Fancy meeting you here, Artemis," Athena smiled softly when the other goddess whirled around, bow at the ready.
"You startled me," Artemis frowned, lowering her weapon and pushing her bangs from her eyes. Her hair was short, cropped just below her ears, and her brown eyes were narrowed.
"You don't need to kill that man you're after, you know," Athena laughed, a soft giggle like the tinkling of bells.
"How did you-" The moon goddess looked slightly shocked, biting her lip.
"Goddess of wisdom, remember?" Athena couldn't help but grin at the look on Artemis's face. "It's not like he was trying to take your virtue, Artemis, what he saw was an accident."
"He still saw!" Artemis exclaimed, cheeks flaming at the memory. Stupid human, wandering around the forest lake where he didn't belong. He'd seen basically everything of her there was to see. "I don't want anything to do with men, that's why I asked Zeus for eternal virginity!"
"I understand," Athena approached her carefully, laying a hand on Artemis's shoulder. "I asked for the same thing, remember?"
Artemis sighed as she looked up at her fellow goddess, nodding almost imperceptibly. She was immediately lost in Athena's bright green eyes that radiated energy. She blinked, suddenly unable to speak. Her breath caught in her throat and she realized for the first time how painstakingly beautiful Athena was. She had long, wavy, dark brown locks and high cheekbones paired with thick eyelashes and a slender nose dusted with light freckles. The moon goddess squeezed her eyes shut at the thoughts she was having. Was this why she'd never wanted anything to do with men?
"So you've finally realized it?" Athena chuckled. Artemis's eyes flew open in surprise.
"What do you mean?" Artemis asked carefully. Athena's hand was still warm on her shoulder.
"Why you asked for eternal virtue," The goddess of wisdom replied, acting as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
"It's because I want to stay pure," Artemis shot back, eyes blazing. What made Athena think she could just go around acting like a stuck up know-it-all?
"Or is it, perhaps," Athena purred. "Because you like women." She leaned her head down, pressing a tender kiss to Artemis's lips. Artemis kissed back instinctively, rising onto her toes to get a better angle. Athena smirked against her lips, and suddenly Artemis pulled away in shock.
"Athena, I-" She started, staring down at the ground.
"Find me attractive," Athena finished, looking smug. Her eyes twinkled with amusement. "Don't worry, it can be our little secret."
"I swear to Zeus if you tell anyone I'll-" Artemis glanced back up, glaring in a threatening manner and stomping her foot.
"I won't," Athena smiled warmly. She leaned to peck Artemis once more on the lips, grinning mischievously. "But now I must take my leave." She turned to go, but looked back and whispered. "You look beautiful tonight, brighter than the moon you stand underneath."
Artemis stared after her, unsure how to feel about the whole encounter.
