I haven't written for Doctor Who in all of the time I've been on this site, but I thought of a certain scene in Doomsday when I was listening to this song the other day... I couldn't help myself. But ready for angst/hurt. I should've done this a long time ago! To the lyrics of The Killers song, Goodnight Travel Well (in italics). Enjoy xxxNTxxx

A/N: I miss David Tennant, you?
Disclaimer: I don't own Doctor Who or any of the characters, or the BBC while we're at it.

Goodnight, Travel Well...

The unknown distance to the great beyond stares back at my grieving frame
To cast my shadow by the holy sun, my spirit groans with a sacred pain

He knew this pain all too well; it wasn't fair. His hand felt tiny against the cold wall, each smooth area of it making his heart ache. He would try to claw at it if he didn't know any better. Instead, he rested his cheek against the wall too. Maybe he would be able to hear something – highly unlikely. He knew the science behind this, and none of what he wanted to be true really was. But just for his sake, he listened.

It's quite now
The universe is standing still
There's nothing I can say
There's nothing we can do now

There wasn't anything that would be able to reverse this. She was gone forever and there was no way of getting her back, not now, not ever. So, resigning himself to a life of loneliness, he pushed himself away from the wall and strode away, eyes staring into space with a knowing agony bleeding his heart to certain death.

There was one thing he could do. He used one tiny little crack in the universe, blew up a sun, just so that he project his image onto that sorry-beach. He almost looks real as she moves towards him, tears staining her face.

And all that stands between the soul's release
This temporary flesh and bone

She can't believe that touch isn't able. He wants to hold her, to comfort her, to kiss her. He wants to tell her that it will be okay, but he knows that he can't. She asks him if this is it, he'll never see her again? He can't... words are like drops of poison in his mouth.

I know that it's over now
I feel my faded mind begin to roam

He wants to tell her that he loves her; to reiterate her very words. But as his mouth opens and her name is spoken into the wind, that said wind blows away his image like ash at a funeral. He never gets to see her face, broken in unbelievable torture. All he see's, back in the TARDIS, is the blur of his own tears as they cloud his vision. And his mind flashbacks.

Every time you fall and
Every time you try
Every foolish dream and
Every compromise

The tears keep coming, fast flowing.

Everything you told me and
Everything you said
Everything you left me
Rambles in my head
There's nothing I can say
There's nothing we can do now

The TARDIS groans with him, feeling the pain too. That burning star is dangerously close.

Up above the world so high
Everything you loved and
Every time you try
Everybody's watching
Everybody cry

The image of the last time he had seen her played over and over in his mind as he flicks the TARDIS switches and set a new destination. He had to forget about it. He needed to move on. He needed to go now. But slowly, the last time he had seen her smile, that precious memory, was fading like his projection had.

Stay, don't leave me!
The stars can't wait for your sign
Don't signal now...
There's nothing I can say
There's nothing I can do now

All he could do was say goodbye to her. In his head. The way he had meant to.

Goodnight, travel well.
