I will always love you.
"And I will always love you," it sang loudly from the speakers in the crowded nightclub. As Catherine watched them she couldn't help but cry.
'Grissom,' she thought wondering what he was doing that very second. She missed him desperately; she had been doing so for the last three years. Three painful years had gone by since he had left her side, only to never return again.
She had in the meantime had been with Vartann, but that didn't last as he wanted more than she did. She just couldn't give herself to him fully as she didn't love him the same way he loved her.
It was then as the song continued to play and the couples on the dancefloor continued to dance closely she realized that the only man she had fully loved was Grissom. Her bugman. Not even her spouse Eddie had she loves as highly as she had loved Gilbert. There had always been a special connection between then and when he left it was like a piece of her heart got torn out.
A couple of more tears ran down her cheek as he wished he was there, dancing with her right that second. Wishing he had never left her, the lab, his lab behind.
In a way she hoped that he had now all he wished for, but in another way she was still sad that his time was not spent with her.
Without even realizing it she started to sing along with the song, "And I IIIIIII will always love you, I will always love you, I will always love you."
As the song slowly ended she was a crying mess, she didn't know what to do, go home to an empty bed or stay watching happy couple dance, while she was alone in the bar drinking. She had nowhere to go, no one was waiting for her, and she was no longer needed. It was her night off and Lindsey was now living near her school.
'Oh God no,' she thought as the same song started to play once more. Was it to torment her?
Reminding her that everyone but her had found their one true love. At least to her that was what it seemed like.
She cowered her airs to try not to hear, closing her eyes not to see, trying to hide from the world, picturing the two of them dancing together. They had never done so not even once, but still…
Just then when it all seemed so lost she could hear his voice behind her singing "Darling I love you, I will always love you."
She didn't dare to open her eyes, fearing it was her mind playing with her. He couldn't really be here. It was all a part of her daydream. Or was it a nightmare. She wasn't sure.
"Catherine," she heard his voice saying, knowing it had to be real as that was not the words of the next song.
Slowly she turned to look at the man she had missed for so long, the man she loved with all her heart, the man she so desperately needed. It was him, he was really there after all these years.
"Catherine I…" he started, but she put a finger over his lips, making him go quiet saying, "Shhh, just dance with me."
He nodded leading her out on the crowded floor, holding her in his arm, dancing closely with her, feeling her tears against him, realizing how much he had really missed her, knowing he that coming back had been right. He needed her as much as she needed him and he could no longer deny it. He loved her more than he had ever loved anyone else before or after her. And as he lovingly kissed the top of her strawberry blonde head he knew he could no longer live without her. And having her close like this in his arms crying tears of what he could only assume were of happiness he knew he would never have to live without her again. She was his forever as he would always be her.
