The Cost of Jealousy

I was always the odd one, the one left out. I was just poor Peter, poor little Peter... someone to be sorry for, someone to be pitied. I idolized James, I worshipped him. I wanted to be just like him. Bud did he notice, did he care? No, I was just poor Peter, Peter the Rat.

Sirius... don't get me started on Sirius. He was a bad one, he was. But at that time, I thought that that was cool. Had it not been for him though, my hero would never have gotten into trouble. My hero would have been the best student Hogwarts had ever seen.

And Remus, it's his fault too. A dirty werewolf he is. Had he not been a werewolf, I wouldn't be a rat. Had he not been here, it would be me that James and Sirius came to when they needed advice. Remus made me look so stupid... and he didn't even try... which made it worse.

Then there was Lily, always telling James off. she acted as if she owned the place. But she wasn't nice to me, she treated me the same way she treated the other Marauders. I liked that about her. She didn't show favoritism, unlike most other girls.

Then, in seventh year, she started dating James. Everyone made bets on how long their relationship would last. I hoped it lasted, mainly because Sirius didn't like her that much. She just wasn't James's normal type of girl. It irked Remus some... perhaps he liked her? Or perhaps not... for all I know it could have been nearing the full moon.

Christmas came and went, and the couple was still happily together. And then Valentines Day went flying by. James came in with a grin from ear to ear, it was the day before graduation, and he had just bought Lily's graduation present.

Try as I might, I was unable to get him to tell me what he bought for her. But that night when I walked into the dormitory James, Sirius, and Remus were whispering quietly, peering at something James was holding. When they saw me standing there they hastily broke apart.

I glared over at Sirius and Remus and then dropped onto my bed. As I fell asleep I remembered something Snape had told me after a detention we had together. "If you ever get tired of being James's lapdog, let me know. I know someone who would love to have you work for him." After that I drifted into an uneasy sleep.

The next morning Sirius and Remus patted James on the back and wished him good luck. I asked what they were talking about and they just ignored me.

After the ceremony, James proposed to Lily. She accepted of course, and for a few months it was happily ever after. Then Lord Voldemort rose, and the Order of the Phoenix called them to duty.

Then I heard that Lily was pregnant. I couldn't contain my joy. Perhaps I would be allowed to be the child's godfather If so, my goals in life would be complete. They decided that if it were a boy, his name would be Harry James Potter. And if it were a girl, her name would be Jennifer Lily Potter.

And then the joyous day came, and still James had not approached me about a small issue. The child was born and word spread like wildfire. Sirius Black was the godfather of Harry Potter.

It was then that I remembered Snape's advice, and I contacted him. He was all too happy to set me up. A burning pain on my arm later, and I was his... Snape's master's.

I thought that I would never betray James... but Sirius forced him to let me be the Secret Keeper. I, like a dutiful servant of the Dark Lord, informed him of their wheabouts. And the rest was history.

Just a short little thing on why Peter betrayed Lily and James. A little bit of jealousy can go a long, long way.
