Chapter 1
It was really hard to see Walnut Grove being blown into pieces, especially the house. Walnut Grove became my home after father died. When we stopped for lunch, all the adults had a meeting. They decided that we were all going to find a place where we can all be together. I'm glad that the adults chose that because we are all like one big family. I couldn't imagine life without most of the Walnut Grove citizens, but I know that it will be hard to live without Walnut Grove. But just the fact of us all living in the same town makes me feel so much better! Miss Plum says that we should do our studies before we get too behind on them. I already was doing my studies because I get bored sitting in the wagon. I like when we stop for lunch or at night because all of us kids get to run around and play. It feels good to do so too. Nancy doesn't think that it's "lady-like" to run around and play. So she sits in her wagon and rants about how she had to leave behind all of her expensive things.
Suppertime (on the MN/SD) border:
"I miss talking care of my rabbits," said Jason. "Your rabbits?" Jeb asked him. "Yeah my rabbits, I'm the one who did the chores." Jason told him. Jeb shrugged in agreement. "So what did you do with the rabbits?" Nancy asked him. "We turned them loose." Jeb told her. "You mean out in the wild?" exclaimed Nancy. "They were wild before we got them." Jason told her. "All animals have a natural instinct of talking care of them selves." I told her. "Just like people do." Nancy gave me one of her snotty looks before speaking. "Mother says that we are going to live in Sioux Falls, it's a big city." She told us. I gave Jeb a worried look. Would we all have to live in a big city? Where'd your ma get hear that?" Jeb asked Nancy. "I'd rather live there than stupid, old Walnut Grove." She told us. The three of us stopped eating and stared at her. "That wasn't a very nice thing to say Nancy!" I told her. "You mean you would rather live in Walnut Grove instead of a big, beautiful city?" exclaimed Nancy. "Where you can buy expensive and pretty things?" "Of course!" I told her. "We're farmers; we don't care about fancy and expensive stuff!" Said Jason. "Yeah, we don't care if we're not rich either." "I don't believe it!" Nancy said under her breath.
"Jeb, Jason, time for bed!" Mrs. Carter called to them. "Well goodnite Jenny and Nancy!" Jeb told us. "See ya in the mornin'." Jason called back to us as they ran to their wagon. "I have to go set my hair." Nancy told me. "Goodnite Jenny." "Goodnite Nancy." I told her.
I decided that I should probably go back to my wagon and study a bit before I went to bed. Uncle Manzo and Aunt Laura were sitting by our campfire. "You best be gettin to bed Jenny" Uncle Manzo told me. "It's after 9:30." "I know." I told him. "I'm just gonna study a bit before going to sleep." "I just put Rose to bed." Aunt Laura told me. "Your already ahead in your studies. You should get some sleep." "All right, well goodnite Uncle Manzo and Aunt Laura." I told them as I kissed their cheeks." "Goodnite Jenny." They replied back. I said my prayers and before I could even say Amen, I fell asleep.
