Kira flushed slightly as Rei gently covered her hand with his own.
''Are you OK?'' he asked, eyes full of concern.
'I'm fine. Just a little shaken and embarrassed about falling off again.''
''Its ok, just takes a little practise. Want to try again?''
''Sure.'' Kira smiled up at him
Rei Hoisted her off the ground and brushed a smudge of dirt off her cheek, causing her to flush even more.
Kira dusted herself down and gingerly climbed back on the bike.
She took a deep breath and kicked at the starting pedal...
Then again...
And again... but the bike had given up. Kira panicked. She had broken one of Rei's bikes, something so precious to him. She'd been so lucky when it came to the bikes. Rei had let her ride with him when other girls weren't allowed anywhere near them.
'I'm so sorry' Kira's voice broke into small sobs as tears rolled down her cheeks. It was becoming harder to breathe inside the helmet. Kira tugged at the straps until they finally came loose and pulled it off, allowing her bunched up long hair to cascade down her shoulders.
She looked up to find a blurry pair of brown eyes staring into her own, before feeling a pair of strong warms arms pull her into a gentle embrace.
''It's OK'' Rei whispered as Kira buried her face into his chest. ''It's OK'' he repeated, feeling her sobs die down, tenderly stroking her soft hair with one hand and running his fingers down her cheek with the other. Her tears eventually ceased to flow.
''Don't worry about the bike. Something was probably knocked loose when you fell and it'll be a piece of cake to fix''
Kira untangled herself from Rei's arms, rubbed her eyes and smiled up at him shyly. ''OK''
''But since it was you who fell off and broke it in the first place...''
Tears immediately pricked at Kira's eyes again.
''...just kidding'' Rei grinned at her. ''But you can help fix it anyway. Besides it'll be fun to do it together'' he finished with a wink.
Kira flushed again and grinned back. Fixing a bike together, just the two of them, would be fun
