I know that the Doctor is meant to be the one who is always around to defend the weak, but this Torchwood quote just made me wonder...
He walked away
"There's one thing I always wanted to ask Jack. Back in the old days. I wanted to know about that Doctor of his. The man who appears out of nowhere and saves the world; except sometimes he doesn't. All those times in history where there was no sign of him. I wanted to know why not. But I don't need to ask anymore. I know the answer now: Sometimes the Doctor must look at this planet and turn away in shame. I'm recording this in case anyone ever finds it, so you can see. You can see how the world ended."
He watched as the flames roared around the supposed witches' legs, turning their skirts to ash and searing flesh from bone. The crowds bayed, hungry for blood, as the accused were burned at the stake, their cries lost to an empty sky. But he just turned his back, and walked away.
He watched as people, men women and children, were bought and sold, transported across oceans in boats stained with tears. They were ripped from their homes and cast into a world that could only see them as objects. But he just turned his back, and walked away.
He watched the camps fill with their human livestock, the sky acrid with the putrid stench of burning flesh. The people treated as little more than animals, starved and beaten, worked until they died. But he just turned his back, and walked away.
He watched as children died, on a planet rich with resources, their tears unheeded by the world. They died alone, no food or water, no medicines, no-one to hold them as they passed. But he just turned his back, and walked away.
He watched as the Human Empire stretched out amongst the stars, spreading across sixteen galaxies. He saw the persecution and terror, the fear and horror that the human invaders brought to the alien natives. But he just turned his back, and walked away.
He told himself that humans must learn from their mistakes.
He told himself that history must not be changed.
But in the end, the Doctor knew, deep within his hearts, the truth.
Sometimes the Doctor just looked at this planet and turn away in shame.
