Family

Cas had always had a family. Or at least he'd always thought he did. God had been his father and his fellow angels his brothers. For the duration of his existence, he had stood beside them, never questioning and never doubting what he was told, but that was before he met the Winchesters and learned what family really was and what it really wasn't.

Family was not neat and clean; it was a mess of blood, sweat and tears that all mixed together into an incomprehensible pile that had to be constantly sorted through to keep a slight leash on order. In many ways it was the ugliest thing that he had ever seen, a joke without a punch line, broken shards of glass stuck inside of the skin. But at the same time, it was beautiful and wonderful. It was a cohesive group, a series of individuals working together for the greater good of them all.

He'd admit that it wasn't sensible. It was raw emotion, passion, hatred, desire, rage, and love. In many ways, they were all the same thing, extremely confusing to someone who had lived without them for so long that he was reduced to a blindly following automaton. But with the help of a few good humans, he had found the truth of the matter.

Family is love and devotion. It's Dean who will readily sacrifice himself for your safety, repeatedly ask if you're okay and realize that you're not. It's Sam who'll look at you with those puppy dog eyes, who'll tightly clasp your shoulder and nod because he understands. It's Bobby who'll call you an "idjit", but will always be there beside you to make sure you're still alive.

It's the seemingly little things that make up family. It's not the fights over arguments long forgotten nor is it fate or faith. It's love, simply love, that binds so many varying individuals, ties them together, and makes them who they are. It's what his original family didn't have and what his new one taught him. It was the love that he felt for those men that had him tied, that limited his actions, but also that made him so much better.

And so is the parade of love and family. While in all ways, it seems to destroy, so does it also create, renew, and refresh, making what and who was once damaged whole again just as it had done to him.

A/N:

Hopefully, by now, you'll know that I've come out of retirement, and am writing fanfiction again. Yay! I'm sorry about the unintentional hiatus, but I've actually been sort of dedicated to buckling down and writing a real novel. (Such a pile of [crap] work!) But it's the summer before my freshman year of college, and I plan to donate at least some of that time to you awesome and supportive people.

Anyway, thanks for reading all of this. I hope you enjoyed my second, tiny foray into the Supernatural universe. (I'm so addicted to this show. You don't even know.) Tell me what you think! Remember, reviews feed me and I'm not afraid of the flames.

Remember: Reviews= happy camper. Happy camper= quicker updates. Quicker updates= you reading more. It's a cycle keep it going!

Yours truly, madly, and deeply,

Einstinette
