I closed my eyes and willed him to leave. Tears welled beneath my eyelids and I forced them to stay there.
"Please, just go," I whispered, my voice mixed with sorrow and embarrassment.
"How can I go when I know? I can't leave you."
"Yes you can. I don't deserve you."
Hermione turned to face the tall red haired man and quickly moved her face away from his gaze.
"No Hermione, I can't."
"Why not? How can you stay with me after this?"
"I can because I love you Hermione."
"How Ron?... I betrayed your trust."
"Hermione this isn't your fault…." He moved closer to her.
She was standing in the middle of the living room, the fire crackling in the fireplace behind her. It was the same living room in the same house they had lived in together for the past 7 years. On their wedding day he had carried her over the threshold just a room away. They had spent Christmas' and birthdays in the exact place they stood in at the moment. It was a home already, overflowing with memories and now here they stood… The usually cheerful area covered over by a dark cloud.
Hermione lowered herself onto the loveseat to the side of her, placing her face in her hands.
"Hermione…" Ron sat down beside her and pulled her into him, holding her as his heart wrenched in his chest.
A small sob escaped her and the tears flowed freely now.
"How did this happen Ron?" she looked up and swallowed.
"We'll get through this… I can't lose you."
His voice was filled with pain and Hermione couldn't imagine what was going through his mind.
"I don't want to lose you either. I love you Ron."
"You won't. Just tell me, tell me everything. I need to know."
"It's too much. I can't re-live it… I…"
"I know Hermione, please try. How did this happen?"
"I don't know, I just went to visit him… it was a mistake, I know but…" she trailed off.
"How could you see him after what he did before our wedding? It's like he won't rest until he has you… until you're away from me."
"I thought he would have been over me by now, found someone else you know? I was hoping maybe…"
"You could be friends again?" he asked quietly. Being married to Hermione had made her very predictable to him. Normally she didn't have to say anything without him already knowing what she was going to do.
She nodded and gulped back a sob.
"But obviously what you hoped was in vain…"
Again she nodded.
"I'm sorry Hermione. I should have been there… I should have known what you wanted. I…"
Ron buried his face in his wife's bushy hair, head resting against her shoulder.
"I should have told you Ron, it's just so hard to say."
"It's been five months, please… I need to hear it."
