So Different

War born boy

Knows naught but violence from birth

Middle-class girl

Has love, life and mirth

A small child

Struggling to survive

A happy girl

Who never need ask why

We're older now

And things have changed

He wields a gun

She learns to braid

She's boys and books

And he's blood and raids

If I could

Do you not think I'd run?

If I could

I'd pull you into the sun.

More time passes

And we change

I see more kids drafted

I get higher grades

How can our lives be so different

Yet our world the same?

The war is over, I'm finally free

But I have no one, so a lone wolf I'll be

It's years later

When we finally meet

A chance encounter

A fight for the last seat

You let me sit

And we exchange names

We trade in stories

Your head hangs in shame

You pat my hand

And say it's okay

That it's not my fault

And my past goes down the drain

We are so different and yet the same

We laugh, we cry

But most of all

We love
