Candle on the Water
Disclaimer: I don't own Bones or anything to do with it except this story (what an incredibly stupid thing to say, Disclaimers annoy me).
This is set after/during the events of the last episode of the series that has just been aired on Sky One/Two. The episode was entitled 'The Woman in Limbo.'
Feedback is most definitely welcome- I like to hear from people so please please take the tiny amount of time to review and I will try to return the favour with many of your stories. This is one of three little pieces, of which the third will be the longest.
Time to stop rambling…….
Brennan had not realised how comforting the sound of the waves rolling before her could be. She sat on the rocks, staring out at the vast open space of water. Every now and then a soft spray of water would gently splash her face, somehow making her tears seem less real. The sun had almost set, and now the shadows were her only company. Not that there were any, everyone had gone home ages ago. It was just her now, her and her thoughts. She sat with her knees bent to her chest, her long, linen dress swaying in the ocean breeze. Her bare feet were damp, but she wasn't cold. Her long hair was blowing gently against her face, like a curtain separating her from the world she had left behind. The sea was empty too. No ships in the distance, not a soul in sight. In some ways she liked it, but in others, she didn't. Booth, Ange, Zack, Hodgins…..they were all miles away. Her mum was dead, her dad? Who knew. There really was no-one. No-one to save her from herself. She closed her eyes and leaned her tired head against a rock.
"I don't know who I am anymore! I don't know anyone, anything!" She shouted, backing away from her worried colleagues.
"Temperence Brennan has gone! And now……now there is nothing….I'm alone…."
She ran. As fast as she could. Past Booth, past Angela, even past her brother, and anyone else that was in her way. She didn't know where to, but she ran as fast as she could until she couldn't anymore.
She was alone….
Brennan opened her eyes. She took a deep breath of the salty, fresh air. It comforted her. Her mother had brought them to the seaside, her and her brother. She couldn't remember, but she had seen a photo. It was dark now. She couldn't see much, but the rocks beneath her felt strong, and the breeze on her face somehow set her free from the harsh reality of her life.
She looked at the dark water in front of her and sat up. A single candle was floating delicately on the water. It was a tiny flame, but it managed to illuminate a large patch of water. It seemed to dance on the sparkling wave, a light in all her darkness.
She cocked her head on one side and closed her eyes as silent tears fell from them. She didn't move when she felt a gentle hand on her bare shoulder.
'You are never alone.'
Booth sat down next to her and quietly whispered as she curled up with him on the rocks. The candle bobbed gently up and down on the waves in front of them, a beacon in the night.
I'll be your candle on the water
My love for you will always burn
I know your lost and drifting,
But the clouds are lifting
Don't give up you have somewhere to turn.
I'll be your candle on the water
Till every wave is warm and bright
My soul is there beside you,
Let this candle guide you
Soon you'll see a golden stream of light
A cold and friendless tide has found you
Don't let the stormy darkness pull you down
I'll paint a ray of hope around you
Circling in the air, lighted by a prayer
