Honesty
Most of us grow up with our parents engraving in our minds the fact that lying is a bad thing. I was told that even if the lie was to make someone feel better, it would come back to bite them in the butt, in the end. I also grew up knowing the phrase, "Honesty is the best policy." Yeah right.
But come on, we all know that when someone starts their sentence with 'To be honest', we can assume that what they are about to say is not going to be to our liking.
"To be honest," she said. I cleared my throat, preparing for the worst, "I love you."
I take that back. Lying is bad, and honesty is the best policy.
Splash
"Let. Me. GO!" Toph screamed, thrashing water everywhere. Sokka was trying not to laugh so hard, because his hold on the tiny, but aggressive earthbender was slowly slipping.
"Are you sure?" Sokka asked with an amused grin across his face, as his hold on her started to loosen.
Her pale eyes went wide, "WAIT!" she squealed and threw her arms around his neck. "Don't let go."
He smiled and hugged her back, "I wouldn't dream of it."
Looks
"Oh Sokka, your hair looks sexy today, " she swooned. Toph covered her mouth and swore she threw up a little.
"You really think so? I worked practically all morning on it."
She tucked an out-of-place hair behind his ears, "I can tell."
Toph snorted loudly. She sensed the Floozy giving her a death glare that would make even Azula shiver.
At least I don't like him for his looks, she thought to herself, and smiled.
Red
"You like Aang, don't you Sugar Queen?"
Katara flushed a crimson color and retorted, "No I don't!"
"I can tell you're lying!" Toph replied in a teasing, high pitched voice.
Once Katara's face turned to her normal tan color, she could think clearly again. An evil smirk appeared on her face as she said slowly and softly, "Well, you like Sokka."
It was Toph's turn to turn red, "Psh, no I don't." Although the earthbender tried to make her answer not obvious, it failed. She quickly turned around to try to hide her blush.
"Oh please. I can tell you're lying."
Bittersweet
Toph ran her fingers over the hard, earth-made bracelet she had bended for him. It was the least she could do after the recent events. A big battle had occurred a few days ago, and Sokka had saved her life more times than she could count. Although, she still had a feeling that she owed him a lot more.
She was sitting behind a larger boulder, gathering up the nerves to talk to Sokka, who she felt was sitting in the grass behind her. But then, she felt someone walk over to him. A girl. Suki, Toph said quietly to herself, spitting out her name as if it were a disease.
He stood up and hugged her. Toph's heart sank. Even since they had rescued her, Sokka and Suki seemed to be inseparable. Toph's ears twitched, but not even she could hear the sweet nothings they seemed to be whispering into each other's ears. She dug her feet into the ground, memorizing the vibrations. And then she felt it. She felt them kiss.
She tried so hard no to let the tears fall. With her feet still gripping the soft earth beneath her, she hugged her knees, hiding her face in embarrassment. In shame. In sorrow. How could I be so stupid? she thought. He loves her, and she loves him back.
She got up slowly, whipping the tears from her face. She crept away, not wanting Sokka to know what she felt.
