The Loveseat
By Delphinus, September 2002 (edited June 2003)
Note: I actually wrote this piece last September, but I didn't know whether or not it would be too far of a stretch. After reading book 5, I realized that this scenario is very likely to happen given the attitudes of certain characters.
Disclaimer: JK Rowling has developed a wonderful world of characters and I definitely owe some of my ideas to her. Also, many thanks to the metaphor of an enzyme by my AP Bio teacher, who completely owns this idea.
The young wizard sighed as he entered the Great Hall. His eyes scanned the decorated room with all of its fake snow falling and twelve pine trees lined up all festive and merry. It was the day before winter break, when he could finally go home and enjoy a happy Christmas. Yet tonight, life seemed to drag as he eyed the couples dancing on the floor.
Miss Warbeck and some of her friends were on stage, their stringed and wind instruments played in mellifluous harmony.
His friends James, Sirius, and Peter, however, had somehow deserted him, planning some pranks of their own. Well, in Peter's case, heading for the table with all the snacks. The wizard's eyes fell on one of the remaining chairs left in the hall. Most of them were filled with kids who were huddled in groups, chatting quietly. There seemed to be only one chair, or in this case, sofa left in the hall. The sofa rested there, on the edge of the dance floor, waiting for somebody to claim it. It was a shabby two-person couch with some stuffing already coming out of it. Trying to avoid as much attention as possible, he slipped cautiously into one side of the sofa and sat down. Waiting for his friends to return, he absentmindedly tugged on a loose tread on his robe and wished desperately that he were elsewhere.
"Hey, Remus," a voice called to him.
Remus quickly turned around and found him face to face with none other than Lily Evans. Somehow she had sat down beside him without getting his attention.
"Er...hello," Remus replied, feeling somewhat awkward. "I suppose you are having fun."
"Oh, not really," she smiled. "You know James and Sirius, they are so imma-."
"Ahhh!" a piercing scream issued from the dance floor. Both of them turned towards the commotion and saw an older girl drenched and water was dripping off her robes.
"Bertha," the boy who had been dancing with her exclaimed. "Are you alright?"
"No!" the girl who was Bertha screeched. "I-I can't - I will find out who you are!" She looked extremely appalled and quickly stomped out of the hall.
Lily gave an exasperated look and pointed towards the back of one of the pine trees. Remus looked and saw Sirius and James laughing while levitating glasses of water.
"Well, there you go," murmured Lily to Remus.
"Yeah," Remus muttered.
"So Remus," Lily turned towards him, smiling. "You want to er- dance?"
Maybe it was the atmosphere, or because it was such an ironic statement, or perhaps it was the fact that the old chair made both of them slide towards the middle but-
"Sure," Remus replied. "I- I'd love to."
Lily grinned and held out her hand to Remus. He got up and followed her to the dance floor.
Unbeknownst to anyone, a young wizard with a dress robe soon replaced the only empty sofa in the Great Hall. He looked tired and eyed the room disapprovingly. Little did he notice when a girl came and sat down beside him.
