The Strongest Of Them All

She thought of herself as weak. Sure, she danced around the battlefield like she owned the place, slashing through heartless with her shuriken and fighting skills. Yeah, she claimed she was invincible because she grew up in a country that was constantly under attack, survived the heartless invasion, and was a ninja princess. She had the battle scars to back up every sing far-fetched story she spun, and her eyes had the sparkle of wisdom beyond her years. But she thought she was weak, and he was the only one who knew.

He knew because he thought the same about himself. He let on like he was strong, was one of the first into battle, and had his heart shrouded in darkness but came out virtually whole. But he knew he was weak, and she knew that he thought this, so she told him her secrets while she watched him cry. It was worth it because neither of them wanted to be alone anymore, and she didn't want to take her secrets (her stories, her life) to her grave.

People thought they were in love, spread rumors of them dating, but they knew better. She could never be in love with him because her whole heart was devoted to a red-eyed "vampire" that was lost in the destruction of their world. He couldn't love her because there was nor more space left in his heart for anyone. But they walked around and held hands and let everyone else drown in their little fantasies of happily-ever-after and true-love-conquers-all. They kept up the charade of happiness and strength, and everything they did they put their hearts into. (Too bad there's nothing left of their hearts to use.)

So every day they pretend, put masks on with a smile, and they go out and fight to protect a world they don't even want to be on any more. And in the largest battle they've seen (so far), when she sees her friends in danger and her mother figure about to die (again), she throws herself into battle and takes the hits instead with as much bravery and courage she can muster.

Later, as she lays in bed with magic coursing through her body trying to combat the darkness (and failing), he's the one that spills secrets like they spill blood. He wants her to stay, clings to her hand, cries as he says that she's the sister he's never had. He begs and he pleads, gets her blood in silver hair, and when he finally thinks to ask why she did what she did, took the hits knowing they would kill her, he almost can't get the words out.

She smiles up at him through an ocean of tears and says exactly what he didn't want to hear.

As pain wracks through her body and darkness eats her heart, he asks for it to take him instead. But it's already taken him once, won't accept him again (because he's lost his light). She doesn't cry out the whole time she's dying, and he stays with her rotting corpse until it's gone.

When he finally leaves the (now empty) room he takes her secrets with him, leaves his with her memory, and vows to keep the stories of the Great Ninja Princess alive, no matter what the cost.

"'Cause I'm a ninja, silly boy.

it's…what I do…"

In the very end, she become the strongest of them all.

Soo, I know it's short. And sort of choppy and fast paced…but it was bugging me, and I had to write it… Maybe when I read over later on, and I see something I don't like, or a place that I could add something, I'll take it down and rewrite it. But till then, it's staying like this.

Review, yeah?
