Amair watched the second hand slowly make it's way around the clock. Two more minutes until she was free to go home. School bore her, it was to easy. She was in all honors classes, had a 4.0 GPA and was extremely talented in everything she did. She was taking high school classes in 8th grade, and even had twenty minutes of her first period at the high school.

Amair really didn't fit in at her middle school, the girls were superficial, the guys were animals and the teachers were just annoying. But that wasn't the real reason she didn't fit in. Amair had a secret, a secret even her overbearing parents had no idea about. Amair could shape shift. She could change into animals and other people. A bird, a beaver, whatever she wanted. She could make her hair a different length, or change it's color. Right now, it was raven black, long and sleek. Amair could change anything and everything about her body, except for her eyes. They were a shocking deep blue.

The bell ring, signaling the end of the day. Amair went to her locker, dropped off her completed homework and closed her locker, taking nothing with her. As she walked down the main hallway, she heard someone call her name, "Amair! I'm glad I caught you before you left. Can you come into my office?" Mrs. Potters was Gateway's guidance counselor. Amair knew her quite well due to the fact that she was the president of student counsel and was a leader in the school's anti-bullying program, Linking Chains.

"Sure. What do you need?" Amair said as she followed Mrs. Potters into the office.

In the office, there was a girl Amair had never seen before. She had short, spiky hair that was blonde with neon, different colored highlights. But the mot notable thing about the girl were her eyes. They were a shocking deep blue, just like Amair's. "This is Dirigendos, she's a new student here," Mrs. Potters said, motioning to the girl, "and I would like you to be her guide for the first week."

Amair nodded, "Dirigen-something, cool name."

The girl smiled, her blue eyes lighting up. "Thank you, it is Latin, though everyone calls me Diri." She had a strange accent that Amair could not place.

Mrs. Potters cut in, "Diri is in honors classes like you are Amair. You two will have practically the same schedule, except for first period of course. Anyways, I just wanted you two to meet, that's all."

The two girls walked out of the school building together. "So where did you move from?" Amair asked, interested in Diri's strange accent.

"You would not know of it, it is a very, very small country. My parents thought it was a good idea to get me out of the country for a while. Warfare is starting to break out, and it is getting to be very dangerous to be there." Diri then put her hands in her pockets and looked to the ground. It was obviously a touchy subject for her.

"Oh, I'm sorry."

"It is alright, you can not do anything about it." Diri then mumbled something that almost sounded like the words "at the moment".

That made Amair feel a little uncomfortable. Maybe in Diri's country human sacrifices were though to end wars. Amair hoped not. "Well anyways, I better get going. I don't want my parents to worry, they're prone to that.

Diri laughed, "I will then see you tomorrow.
