N- is for Noise

One of the great things about working with John Gage is you always know where you stand with him. One of the not so wonderful things about working with John Gage, is he has to tell you all about it.

"If I had a nickel for every time I come off shift in the morning and they are doing some sort of repair work at the building or construction right in front of the apartment," Johnny said, as he splayed his hand across his chest for emphasis, "I would be a rich man!"

"And if that isn't bad enough," he continued to rant to his long suffering partner Roy DeSoto, "between the parties, arguments and "entertaining" going on at night, it's a wonder I ever get any sleep at all!"

Roy tried to jump into the conversation, to suggest ear plugs or something else that would help Johnny drown out the noise. But, he couldn't get a word in edge wise.

"I don't know Roy, maybe I'm getting too old for this apartment life," he told his partner, as he dragged a hand through his shaggy, dark hair. "I mean, it's still nice to see the pretty girls around, but not when they fight, and then make up with their boyfriends all night long! The new next door neighbor is the worst! I swear she has a different man for every night of the week!"

"Imagine that," Roy commented quietly to himself. "Wouldn't give a second look, huh Junior?"

"I don't know what she…." John stopped himself and glanced at Roy. "Did you say somethin'?"

"Who me?" Roy answered innocently enough. "No, I'm just listening…"

Johnny glanced away and looked at the window.

"…listening until my ears are ready to fall off," Roy continued softly.

Johnny jerked his head around, but only saw as his blonde partner concentrated on the road.

Johnny shook his head to himself. "All this noise! Now I think I'm hearing things." He paused for a deep breath.

"Ya know Roy," he sighed, "I've always wanted a place in the country with a little bit of land where I could raise a horse or two. There would be a nice house with a big, wrap porch with room for rocking chairs or maybe even a porch swing. I bet the kids would like that! We could have picnics at my house too then…I mean you and Jo are real generous the way you always share your home with everyone, especially me."

"You know we love to have you and the guys over," Roy assured him.

"I know, but if I were in the country I could get away from some of the smog and noise pollution! I mean, you live in a nice quiet neighborhood. And even though the kids make noise and stuff, it's nothing like the noise pollution going on by me," Johnny glanced over at Roy. "You just have no idea what it's like to never have a moment of peace and quiet!"

"You're right Johnny," Roy said shaking his head, "I wouldn't have any idea."
